Pregnant after a Loss

pregnancy-safe sunblock?

Hi ladies!! So I'm going on a trip to Georgia/So. Carolina next week with DH and went to Harmons this afternoon to get some things. I knew I would get sunblock but it hadn't occurred to me until I was looking at them that they might not all be safe for pregnancy. I bought one called cover-up baby, because it was the only one I found that was mineral-based. Then I went home and googled away to see if it was safe. So I guess my question is as long as my sunblock does not have these chemicals: oxybenzone, homosalate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, octocrylene and para-aminobenzoic acid, I'm ok right? Do they even make sunblock for pregnant people? Thanks!!

Re: pregnancy-safe sunblock?

  • Crap, when I went to Florida a few weeks ago and looked this up, all I found was info saying you MUST wear sunblock if you're pregnant because your skin is sensitive. Nothing about potential problematic chemicals! I wore Ombrelle, because it's the only sunblock that I'm not allergic to! Hopefully it was ok!

  • I had no idea that sunscreen could be a problem. When I was pregnant with DD, I wore all kinds. I guess I need to read more about this.
  • I just got back from a vacation and asked my OB before I went if I should avoid any particular sunscreen ingredients and he said no, any sunscreen is fine.

  • Sorry everyone I didn't mean to worry you!! Like I said it was just an afterthought when I was in the store. Thanks @rox825, I'm glad he said that. I didn't remember to ask that question. Maybe I'm looking too deeply into it, but here is where I found those chemical names in case anyone is interested: https://m.thebump.com/pregnancy/is-it-safe/qa/sunscreen-safe-during-pregnancy.aspx.
    Ironically, its from thebump lol.

I talked to my dermatologist and OB about this - they both recommend mineral based sun-block - Zinc Oxide, etc.  Mineral based stays more on the surface of the skin and is not absorbed like other chemical sun-blocks.

  • Well, I might be a crappy mom b/c I wear whatever sunscreen I have or bought. Through both successful pregnancies. No issues to my knowledge.

  • I found this link super helpful! I got the orange vanilla one she recommended from Amazon.

I will say its not as strong as the regular stuff, but I am reapplying as needed and its good enough, better than chemicals absorbed into baby!

  • I tried the natural sunscreen and it just did not work for me or my husband. We ended up burnt to a crisp. I think any sunscreen is ok, really.

  •  I use Banana Boat Kids. The white cream kind, that is the zinc oxide one. I think it is the sprays that absorb into the skin, where the oxide ones stay ON the skin.  I am really sensitive to many suncreens even when not pregnant, but I tolerate this one well and I use it daily because I work outside.
  • I am allergic to most sunscreens, and I really don't want to start experimenting while I'm pregnant! I'm going to stick with my Ombrelle!
