Diastasis Recti

Anyone have any experience with abdominal diastasis and correction thereof? I know I'm like, a year late talking about it, but I think I might have a slight separation. I did the fingertip test, and would guess I have about a 1 - 1.5 fingertip space between my abominals, but isn't that within the range of normal or something?

Also, everything I've seen online wants you to pay to learn the exercises to correct it, and I'm not about that. Like I've been bragging about recently, I do 10-30 minutes of yoga every day, including planks and various other asanas that engage the abdomen. I just don't know if A) that's enough or B) some of those movements might exacerbate the problem (for instance, I know straight crunches are a no-go).

So, if you have any knowledge or experience, please share! I have a very saggy mommy tummy that I'd like to firm up as much as possible. TIA!

Re: Diastasis Recti

  • Here all new moms get a 10-session physical therapy class post-partum. In my classes after the girls, they've talked about this. To describe what you're supposed to do without knowing the right names (sorry, too tired to look it up right now), picture it like this - if you're going to do crunches, we were told not to do regular ones where you go straight up. That strengthens the vertical muscles and will keep the space like it is. Instead, do more where like your right ear goes toward your left knee and vice-versa. That strengthens the muscles that go across your midsection and are supposed to help close the gap.
But that's just theory. I've still got a gap.
