weaning paci to help sttn?

My lo is 6 months today.  He slept awesome until 4 months.  The last 8 weeks he's gotten up sometimes every 45 min, sometimes every 2 hours or less b/c his paci falls out.  All we have to do is put it back in and he's good but we never know for how long.  His eyes aren't open when I go in and he doesn't have the coordination to put it back in himself yet.  I went to the doc to make sure there wasn't another issue like ear infection which there wasn't and she had me introduce solids three times a day in addition to nursing/bottles.  She said if that didn't work he may have a paci association with sleep and think he needs it to get to sleep.  We tried letting him cio a few times when it fell out and that lasted about 20-30 min before he'd fall asleep.  But he would still wake up an hour later to go through the whole process again.  He likes to sleep on his back/side.  Several times I tried nursing him to see if he was just hungry.  I've found that if I nurse him from 3 a.m. on, he'll go back to sleep and stay asleep for 4 or more hours.  But if I nurse him before then, he still tends to wake up hourly for the paci.  He goes to bed around 7:30.  I dont' know what else to do.  I feel like I've tried so many different things.  It's exhausting.  I know I'm not the only one going through this.  Any suggestions?

    My LO did the same thing but only for a week. She now puts her paci back in herself. I started just handing it to her during the day and she learned to put it in herself. There is NO WAY my LO could sleep without it. She has needed a paci to sleep since the day we came home from the hospital.

    Our paci glow in the dark too. Im sure that helps her find it through the night

    His eyes aren't open when he's crying during the night to even see the paci. But not a bad idea.

    I agree with helping them figure out how to put it back in. Now that our LO can do it, I put like 4 in the crib so he can always find one.

    Just wait until they start throwing it right out of the crib. LO is 6.5 months and really only cries if he's thrown it across the room and there's no way for him to get it.

    haha, yeah this. This happened at 3am last night! I usually don't have to go in, but last night was an exception. Soon enough your LO will be able to get it himself. However, it wouldn't hurt to try putting him to bed a tad earlier so he's not overtired at bedtime (when does his last nap end?) and maybe even introducing a lovey- I know that really helps my son get through the 45 m transition, and it's easier to find overnight. Whatever you do, you'll want to stay consistent though, don't nurse him sometimes and give him the paci other times. Alternatively you could ween him of the paci all together but that'll result in more crying likely. After last night I want to do it sooner than later but am scared. I don't even know when TO ween off the paci? I mean, we have the one that says 6-18m and I haven't seen a paci for the 18+ one yet. Then what?   Anyway, good luck!!

    We weaned DD from the Paci at night around 5 mo for the same reason. I actually read the Ferber book which is how I realized there was a sleep association there. You have to put them to bed without the paci. The first night she was pissed, but by night three she cried for 30 sec and now she doesn't miss it (and sleeps through the night most of the time) I haven't weaned her during daytime/naps since she wasn't having an issue with those.

    Forgot to mention - when she's teething I give her one of those small lovie blanket things to chew on. I move it after she's asleep.

    that's odd to me. my DD always spits out her paci when she passes out. I would either try to help him learn to put it back in his own mouth or wean him off of it.

    My DD spits her paci out once shes asleep.. if she wakes in the middle of the night she goes around the crib to find is (I have 4 usually in the crib with her.. just incase) once she finds it POP in it goes! She mastered this around 6 months so I wouldn't give up yet. Because I dont know if she has a sleep association with it? But she sttn 9+ hours (nurses 15 mins) then back down for another 2-3 hours.

    We also got her WannaNubs the pacis with the teddy attached. She LOVES them. She just cuddles on the bear :) It's so sweet.. I guess it's also like her lovey. We got her these because at 4 months she stuck the whole paci in her mouth.. I freaked out.. and that was the end of pacifiers that could fit in her mouth.. lol (first timer)

    AlsO I think the wannanubs are easier for her to find at night. Now shes big I can watch her flip them around until she finds the paci. When she was little they were handy though because I could prop the teddy so that it would help hold the paci in.

    I also second make sure that LO is getting enough naps in and isn't over tired for bed.

    Also, we hit the 4 month leap REALLY hard and it took us to almost 6 months to get over it. But after 6 months she has been a dream! Just hang in there!!
