One Ultrasound Only

I have only had one ultrasound appointment and that was at 18 weeks. I am now at 29 weeks. My doctor said that she doesn't do any extra ultrasounds unless there is a reason to check up on something that doesn't seem right. So the fact that I've only had one is a good thing but at the same time it seems weird to only see her once. I feel like all the friends I have that are pregnant have gotten multiple ultrasounds. Has anyone else out there only had one ultrasound?

Re: One Ultrasound Only

  • That's very standard from my understanding.

  • I believe that's standard too. I had one at 10 weeks as a dating ultrasound and then my anatomy scan. I don't believe I get another and if I do, I don't expect it to be before 36w.

  • That's pretty standard for most the places around here. My doctor does a an initial, the A/S, and one more closer to delivery. We've had more but that's because little man doesn't like to cooperate.

You could always pay a 3rd party boutique type place, or ask your doctor if you could pay out of pocket for another in her office.

Otherwise, yes, 1-2 ultrasounds is standard (dating + anatomy scan, or just anatomy scan).

  • My doctors office does the a/s and then one around 34 weeks. So 1 sounds pretty standard for a normal low risk pregnancy. As the baby gets bigger it becomes increasingly difficult to see much.
  • That's pretty standard in a lot of places, especially as we progress and things get harder to see. Also, no reason to submit the baby to more testing and stuff than is necessary. I had more than one but that's only because I elected to do the NT and there was a check to see if everything was ok because I was cramping really bad around 7 weeks.
  • I always heard about just having 1, but so far I've had 6 (1 of them being an elective us at a boutique to determine the sex) and I have another one scheduled in another 3 weeks. My Dr. jut likes to check on the progress even tho there hasn't been anything flagged that needs to be checked up on. But I'm not going to argue, I like seeing my little boy :)

  • That's usually standard.  Others may have more u/s because of complications or testing.  With DD, I had only the a/s.  I've had two this time, but only because this LO wouldn't cooperate and they couldn't get all the measurements the first time.

  • I just had an anatomy scan, but I did pay for a 3d/4d scan for fun.

  • It seems pretty common around here too, but I have a lot of friends that get an u/s every appointment and they record it on a DVD. I know it is not necessary to get one every visit, but the reassurance would be awesome! I had one at 9 weeks to get the dates and then I had my 20 week a/s. My cousin is a ultra sound tech and she is doing one for me tomorrow (@27 weeks) and I have no idea if my Dr is planning to do another. I am getting another a/s at 32-34 weeks to check on our baby girls echogenic bowel... crossing all fingers and toes that it has disappeared and everything is fine :)
  • My OB combined my dating and anatomy scan ultrasounds.  I did go for an elective ultrasound at a boutique place like @ghostof5letters mentioned to determine sex at 15 weeks, but I hear you.. I want to see him again, too!

  • Yes, one is pretty normal. Some doctors will also perform an early pregnancy dating scan, but unless there are complications or multiples, I don't think most ladies get an ultrasound after the A/S.

  • With my normal pregnancy, I had a dating one and the a/s. At 40 weeks I lost weight so they had me do an NST and my OB did an u/s to make sure fluid was fine.

This time, getting one every 3-4 weeks, along with a bunch of appointments, blood draws, and hospital stays is a pain. I totally understand wanting to see your baby, but be happy you aren't getting to :) It's a blessing in disguise!
  • I had a "dating" and anatomy scan but since they found a choroid plxus cyst during my A/S I had to go to a specialist where I had 2 more U/S. Usually if you aren't high risk or don't have any problems, it's standard to only have 1-2.

  • that's all I had was my first too but that was 10 years ago and 13 years ago soI think that is still normal this time it's not the case because I have high blood pressure and other issues

  • I've had 4. A dating ultrasound at 8 weeks, another at 12 weeks because we couldn't find the heartbeat with the doppler, one at 18 weeks because I was severely dehydrated and at the hospital, and my a/s at 20 weeks. Usually it would be just 2.

  • I have had quite a few this pregnancy because of other issues, but standard with DS and with this LO outside if the "issues ultrasounds" I get 3, dating, anatomy, and at the end to help with checking position before labor and delivery.

I've had 6 so far this pregnancy and 3 the pregnancy before.  Only 1-2 U/S is a blessing in diguise, they only check on you so often when there are potential issues.  My previa has finally cleared but I've been told to expect another US near the finish line, not sure what for.
  • I only got 2 last time and the second one was because I had a low lying placenta so they had to check on that but this time I'm only getting the one that I know of. I used to think it was kind of weird too but it's a good thing since it means there are no problems! :)

  • As everyone else has said, it's standard. I had 1 with DS for the anatomy scan. We did elect to do a boutique option with him to find out the gender a week earlier so we could tell FIL what we were having (he was in the ICU and passed a few hours after us telling him). This time around I've had 3 so far and will have my fourth next week because of low lying placenta that hasn't moved enough. Minus the whole dying FIL situation, I'd rather be where I was last time around and not need the additional scans.
  • Each time I've had dating, nt scan at 12 weeks, and anatomy scan. With ds I had a third trimester scan bc they thought he was small...he ended up being 8 lbs lol. I don't think I'll get any more this time.

  • I get to see her every appointment, because he uses ultrasound to check HB, fluid, growth every time. But much like this last week, it's maybe 2 minutes and done. He doesn't take his time.

I had crazy complications with DD1, and had 2 full U/S a week, for about 16 weeks. That doesn't include the level 2 ultrasounds, and ultrasounds done in the hospital if she failed her BPP. We lost count somewhere around 56 ultrasounds total.

  • My practice does 3 u/s as standard. As for my friends, I honestly don't know anyone who has only had one for just regular pregnancies with no concerns or complications, two to three seems to be typical of those that I know. But, it could just be the friends that I have.

  • I get 2...we chose to do the NT scan. So the anatomy scan and one farther along. I may end up doing a 4d later to see though.

  • 1 (the a/s) is definitely standard.  My last pregnancy I also had an NT u/s since we just wanted as much info as we could get non-invasively.  This pregnancy they did a dating u/s which was unnecessary since I knew within a day or two when I conceived, had the a/s, and since my nephew was born with a slight heart defect and I have placenta previa, I've also gotten a fetal EKG (which is basically a very detailed u/s) and 1 follow-up u/s to check the previa and at least 1 more scheduled to check it again.  Plus I have to be on pelvic rest.  I'd much rather not have any issues to worry about and just have had the a/s, so consider yourself lucky.

  • I had a dating one and an anatomy scan. I won't have anymore unless there is a specific medical reason. When you get further along, it can get harder to see things anyway, because they get all folded up and smooshed in there.

  • I get a cervical US every four weeks, but that's all it is. Last time we could see the side of her head and her ear. Doc goes, "there's her little head and her ear... But that's not what were looking at!" And went right back to measuring stuff. *bummer* especially as our AS was suuuuuuper disappointing. We didn't bring home one good picture!

  • I've had 7 so far, for one reason or another. I have another scheduled next Monday. I hope all is well this time.
  • I had an early dating one plus the A/S. I also opted for the completely optional NT scan, which for this pregnancy was covered by my insurance due to my age. I might have one more towards the end to check size since I tend to grow big babies. Otherwise I would just have two, like with my last pregnancy.

  • I have had the dating and anatomy US.  The only reason I got a dating US is because I was super stressed because I had a MC in June and they wanted to check for a heartbeat so I could chill out at 8 weeks.  Otherwise I would only have the anatomy scan.

  • I had 2 U/S with my DS only because I switched doctor's when we moved. With this one we got a 9 week dating U/S, an anatomy scan and then in a week I am going back to get one where they check the growth of the baby.
