Talk to me about first foods

The 6 month mark is quickly approaching so I'm thinking about what I will introduce when we get there. I was going to go the traditional rice ceral route. However there are so many contradictory pieces of info out there. Kellymom even has different views in the same page.

What did you do? How did it go?

Re: Talk to me about first foods

  • I actually started with carrot, and then sweet potato.  I skipped rice cereal but added in oatmeal so he could get the iron and I give him that with a little cinnamon and some pumped milk.

I initially gave him the same food for a few days in case he showed signs of allergies.  I have been a little lapse doing that for other fruits and veggies but it's a good idea!

  • We did baby led weaning- here is a good intro: https://www.rapleyweaning.com/assets/blwleaflet.pdf There is also a book of the same name. Our ped recommended starting with whole foods anyway- strips of meat and pieces of soft fruit or veggies. Rice cereal is not very nutritious and i think they are moving away from that recommendation. We started DS at 6 months with pieces of banana, avocado, sweet potato, and yogurt with applesauce. We let him gnaw on harder things like apple slices, too. BLW is great because the baby takes the lead- it was much easier to eat together because you let your LO feed themselves and you're not stuck force feeding them purees. It's entertainment for them and helps with their motor development, and it is supposed to raise a less-picky eater- i think that has been true for us.
  • I was thinking of doing oatmeal but then it has wheat in it so now I don't know. I feeli like the answer to this is like everything else, do what works for you. Hmmmm...,
