Measuring right but gaining LOTS of weight!

I will be 22 weeks tomorrow. So pre-pregnancy I was 118 lbs and 5'7". I went for my 4th doctors appointment and apparently shocked the doctor a little. He was initially worried because in the last 4 weeks I have gained 11 lbs. Which means since conception I have already gained 19 pounds. Based on my BMI I should gain 25-35 by 40 weeks. He said he was a little worried at first because of the rapid weight gain but stated that I was measuring correctly for my weeks.

Is anyone else gaining more weight than they expected? I am not sure what is causing this and wanted to see if anyone else is having this issue.

  • Im surprised your dr was concerned about how much youve gained over all. 11 lbs in 4 wks is a little more but you started off very small. I am 5'6" started at 130 and my dr told me id gain a little more than the average. Im almost 23 weeks and gained like 15 or so. I think youre fine as long as youre making mostly healthy choices and getting some exercise.

  • You started off very slim, that weight gain doesn't sound remarkable to me. I gain a little more than average, but I have lost it every time. Also, many women gain a lot in the middle of the pregnancy, then it tapers off.

  • I gained 54 the first pregnancy. I got lectures about the weight gain at most every appointment. The second tri was really where the bulk of the weight came on. I knew he was concerned since it can cause complications but it seems like unless I ate nothing but salads I would gain more weight than he liked. Just know you will have to work harder to get the weight off.

I started out in a healthy weight range. I had gained a little less than 10 pounds, but in the last week and half or two weeks, I've jumped a few pounds up, so I'm up about 13-14 now. My doctor has not even mentioned weight. You were very thin to begin with (lighter than me and I'm 5'3) so your weight gain sounds healthy to me.

  • He's probably more concerned at the 11 pounds in one month than anything. I remember last Christmas the doctor gave my friend a hard time for gaining 8 pounds between her December and January appointment and she was not at all overweight plus it was over the holidays. They just like to see the weight come on gradually i think.

  • Your total weight gain is right on track for how many weeks you are. At 5'7 and 118, you are at a 18.5 BMI this is the lowest end of "normal". Personally I hate BMI and ignore it for individuals, it is for looking at large populations. As long as your BP is normal, there is no excessive swelling, and no protein in your urine, I wouldn't be concerned.

  • I'm having a similar experience. I started at 130 at 5'4" and had gained 21lb at my 20w appt. my dr brought it up as double what they'd expect. I'm very frustrated because I haven't changed my diet very much from my original healthy eating and have been trying to go walking whenever the weather is nice. Friends I've talked to say my weight is normal and not to worry. I have never been overweight, so it extra hard to hear the dr telling me to watch what I eat. It makes me self conscious at a time when I should be able to embrace the changes to my body.
