Wit's end

What are some tips or tricks when your child is have an terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day? My child is in rare form today and I have seriously considered hiding in the bedroom and using the toys I know he is scarred of to be a deterrent from him coming in.

So what do you do?

  • We had that day yesterday. It was rough. Nap time rest things a bit, but, yeah...

I usually strap him in the stroller or the car seat and go somewhere relatively safe, where my expectations of him are really simple, so we don't just keep fighting. The duck pond or a really big park that's fenced in. Last week we were having an awful day so I took us to a wildlife refuge outside of town and we watched birds. It was really fun!

  • Oh geez I hear you! Honestly those are not my shining moments as a human, much less a mother. If I'm in a clear frame of mind I try to just hug the child because it's got to suck to throw tantrums the way mine has lately. Otherwise I take out all the stops and let her eat junk, paint a big messy picture and totally ignore any naughty behavior which is completely counterproductive. Then I go get wine once dh gets home and I tell him he is on his own for bedtime and that I'm done. In fact I'm at our rental house right now sitting I silence waiting for my next showing. It's a glorious bit of silence despite my distain for cats.

  • To answer your question though, I don't take away outings. In fact we may go somewhere just because she's being a handful because she is infinitly better behaved out and about than at home.

  • I need to remember how much she loves bathtime that would be a great distraction. Oh and the outdoors. I miss the outdoors it is so freaking cold and nasty I know better weather will fix a lot of bad behavior.

10 mins outside even in bad weather won't kill them. At least I hope not :/. That's my go to when I can't take it anymore.
Oh I totally agree, I just hate bundling up for 10 minutes and ive been too freaking lazy to bother lately. It's a personal problem ;)

Well, if I was 48 weeks pregnant like your ticker says, I'd be lazy too...as it is, I only have the excuse of bundling of a 3 yo, 2 yo, and 7 mo, and myself being too much work.

I don't have anything productive to add to the ideas. Well, I sometimes try doing something totally unexpected (running around the living room like an elephant, rolling across the floor, etc...) to get their attention and make us all laugh. Then I ask them to join me.

Here's to hoping things have gotten better!

  • A wagon ride always calms DS down. If he's tired, a drive in the car.

  • Put them in the bath...or, put them on my bed with their favorite show while I take a bath. Keeps them quiet and visible and gives me a chance to relax.

  • I'm starting to think my kid is a weirdo. I'm the one with the bad days being tired and grumpy. He's just about to turn three and he's great at entertaining himself. I tell him I need a moment to please go and read a book, play with nook, letter, numbers, or something and he actually goes. He's freakishly happy. I also have an echo microphone from Lakeshore that I use to make funny noises that he loves. Something like that could be a huge distraction. All else fails, lock yourself in the closet and breathe.
