  • I voted for sharp pieces up but by that I meant the eating end of the utensil up. I feel they need to be up and spread out in order to get washed well. I understand the argument that you should put them "face down" so that when you take them out you aren't touching the eating end, but your hands should be clean when you're putting away clean dishes anyway. As for sharp knives, we generally hand wash them because they are wood handled and expensive as shit, but for our solid stainless steel steak knives, for example, I put the point down so I don't jab myself when I'm putting other things in the dishwasher.

This is a pet peeve of mine. I put the sharp side down. If they're pointing up then you have the potential to cut yourself when unloading them and also you're touching the end that you eat off of which doesn't make much sense to me. However, I'm also someone who will rearrange the dirty dishes in the dishwasher to the way I usually load them if someone like my husband puts them in "wrong" ;)
I definitely do the bolded also.  It has to be loaded just right so you can get maximum potential, right?!   :)

I totally so that too!!! I put sharper knives towards the back and silverware facing up. I feel like it doesn't get as clean if its all bunched together facing down. Hands are clean when unloading the dishwasher that is steaming hot bc I'm too impatient!!

SS- The knives go pointy side down, but everything else goes business end up!  There's definitely some method to the madness, I'm a little anal retentive about pretty much everything!

This argument doesn't really make any sense to me.  You touch the FOOD you are eating when you are preparing it; why can't you touch the silverware you're eating it with?  (Yes, I realize a lot of food gets cooked, but not salad, fruit, stuff like cookies you eat with your hands).  Personally, I am not unloading a clean dishwasher with grubby hands, so if I touch the tines of a fork, nbd.  As for the sharp stuff, our sharp knives don't go in the dishwasher, so it's not a problem.  I'm a business-end up kind of girl -- just think it gets cleaner that way.

That said, I am EXTREMELY familiar with the issue of a spouse who loads the dishwasher ALL WRONG. :)  I have been known to completely rearrange it...

Ditto.  Except this is now just for the rare times when I'm visiting my mom or someone else with a dishwasher.  Or way back when we lived where we had one.  We have a teeny tiny kitchen now, and I am the dishwasher.  Though I follow the same rules for the drying rack after hand-washing dishes, except anything really sharp would just get laid down on the towel under the drying rack.

Totally relate to all you who re-arrange when others have loaded dishwasher, too!  Though instead of grouping like silverware together, I separate them compulsively so that the spoons don't accidentally nest leaving the touching sides unwashed.

  • We have a dishwasher with the rack on top drawer, so forks and spoons get loaded on their sides, and knives pointing down. I always organize it in groups to make unloading easier and always had to re-arrange. DH has finally caught on to my methods and now loads as I do.
