White Noise is the New Black

...at least in our home! Recently after several tries to get LO to stay asleep once I put her down, in desperation one early, early (like 3 am) morning, I you tubed this brilliant concept. Suddenly it became like a sedative to her! It really conks her out!! With DD1, we found the Slumber Bear to work well with this issue, as we also have the Sleep Sheep, but neither girls loved too much. The only thing I don't like about the whole white noise concept is sometimes it creeps me out- makes me think I'm in a sci-fi movie and that I'm being stalked or something. Just curious, what "noise machines" or other techniques have worked for you, past or currently?

Re: White Noise is the New Black

  • I have a white noise app on my phone. It goes in the co sleeper with them until they're out (usually just a minute or so), then, I put it on my night stand and leave it going all night. My boys started doing 5 and 6 hour stretches between feeds when I started using the white noise app

  • I use this. It's the MyBaby by Homedics. As you can see, there are several different sound options. It has a timer or, if you're like me, you can leave it on all night to drown out other noises. DS has a similar one that he loves.

  • LO loves the sound of a fan. We have the white noise app that has a fan on it.

  • Right now we use a white noise app (usually set to rain). When LO transitions to her room we'll use the sound machine we got at our shower (womb noises, rain, white noise, melodies or you can hook up an iPod or iPhone to play music).

If you need other calming techniques google the 5 S's from happiest baby on the block. They help us too.

  • We use the app sound sleeper set on hairdryer for 30 mins it's great knocks her and me out
  • This is what we have only I got it at walmart for $5 cheaper. Love it! LO had slept in the bassinet in his room every night since we got it. He saw the projector pictures for the first time tonight and was mesmerized. I love that it has a timer and a voice activation setting. When he cries, the noise and projection come back on to help soothe him.

  • We have a white noise machine and after some experimentation she seemed to respond best to the heartbeat sound so that goes all night. It also had a projector with a little rotating picture that is bright enough to nurse by in the middle of the night.
  • Mine doesn't like the static noise, but loooooves the sound of water running. It soothes her almost instantly.

  • Every person in my house requires white noise to sleep. Since E sleeps in our room she sleeps with white noise too, but we just use fans. I have an app that we use if we are staying some where else.

Relax Melodies app... Like fifty sounds, you can combine to create a sleep Symphony!
  • We have a projector/noise machine from target. It's a Homedics and it is awesome! Dd loves the lullabies and for DS we do the ocean or rain. There is a heartbeat but that totally creeps me out!
  • We have the Homedics one and I had been keeping it on the outdoors one (not sure what that one is called but it's like crickets and such) and he was so restless at night and didn't stay asleep in crib long. Two nights ago I switched to the Oceans sound and he is sleeping longer. I honestly think it's cuz of the noise change. So crazy!!

  • We have the Sleep Sheep and he is zonked out within seconds whenever we turn it on. It is great for grocery store runs and time spent in waiting rooms at doctors' offices if he is fussy. The only downside is that people must wonder why my baby makes ocean sounds and whale sounds. The upside is that people stay away from the baby who sounds like a whale. :)

  • @coreyeliz‌ my app is literally called "white noise."

@babycaps‌ I don't like artificial white noise either---it grates on me. Oh well....

I found this app and I gotta say, the hair dryer one works very well! Thanks for this tip!

We have the same thing I think! DD falls asleep to the ocean waves every night. She loves it. I agree with you though. The heart beat is creepy.
We have the same thing as well. Thus week she let me change it to rain but for several weeks the only sound she wasted was the creepy heartbeat!

ETA- the light from the projector is perfect to nurse by at night!
