Acid Reflux Mommies

I've been taking LO to a pediatric chiropractor as many friends swear by it. Haven't seen anythign miraculous though he is a little less cranky these days, though it's hard to play on the floor when he's spitting/throwing up. Today she suggested we drop the Zantac he's on and try a supplement from Good Earth that should help reduce his reflux. I feel like he's starting to grow out of the Zantac but still shows no sign of AR improvement. Anyone tried the supplement they have?
If not, if your LO took Prevacid, how long before it worked? If we switch our pediatrician says there has to be a lapse between the Zantac and Prev. I worry about it getting any worse without medicine...that his his ability to sleep and my sanity.

I would be extremely wary of a supplement for reflux.  First, supplements are not regulated by the FDA and therefore there is no oversight that determines actually what is in them, and in what doses.  Without a chemist to test the tablets, you aren't sure what you're getting and putting in LO's body.

Second, there is very little actual scientific evidence of holistic or homeopathic treatments having meaningful effects. (ETA: a recent study actually shows proof that homeopathy is totally useless)

I suggest finding out exactly what is supposedly in these supplements and looking for studies from the NIH, medical journals, etc. (Google Scholar is a great place to start) and see if there's any real evidence to back this up.  Then decide if you're willing to risk an unregulated supplement.

Many antacids don't actually reduce the volume/frequency of the spitup, just the pain.  As long as your LO is growing and meeting milestones, you probably don't need to worry.

  • Sadly even keeping him upright he still spews milk/half digested milk. He will even spit up small chunks right before the next feeding sometimes. I pretty much am home bound because of feedings and trying to avoid him spitting up all over his carseat
  • My LO is on Prevacid. It took a few days for it to take full effect. She still spits up, but it doesn't bother her. She also doesn't scream in pain anymore after meals.
  • Mine just switched today actually from zantac to prevacid solutabs. I will see how it goes, but according to our ped the prevacid works like gold.
Personally, I think it would be silly to listen to a chiropractor about your babies AR. The ped knows best about this.

This is my life.  The volume of spitup is astonishing.  I've given up on the car seat straps, and he wears a bib all the time except in the crib at night.

But since LO is gaining weight adequately and meeting milestones, we aren't treating.

  • He's been on Zantac for about 5-6 weeks. We saw his dr this week and they upped his dose to 1ml twice a day. You can still see him visibly gag and he didn't use to do that when the medicine worked. We're trying a probiotic from the health food place and if it doesn't seem to help we'll jump to prevacid since it's stronger anyways. Not looking forward to the continual sleepless days and nights though. We have his crib propped and he usually ends up in his carseat around 2am because of reflux. (Yes I know car seats are dangerous please don't start on me on that one. I can't just let him sleep on me night after night).
  • Up the Zantac dose or switch to Prevacid but please don't do a supplement. Too many unknowns. I like chiros but sometimes I feel like they are out of line in making suggestions about medical care. Fix my back, please but I'll stick with my regular doc for the rest.

  • He doesn't like his swing so I'd be hesitant spending more money on something he won't use. It would be so nice though to put him in the swing and call it good. Maybe I'll ask around and see if a local friend has one we can borrow.
  • the swing and RnP are totally different. DD isn't crazy about her swing but is in love with the RnP. and from what I've heard, swings aren't the safest to sleep in overnight. DD is 11 lbs and we just upped her Zantac dosage to 1 mL three times a day. I can tell we need to up it because all of her symptoms come back or get worse again. 5-6 weeks seems like LO is growing out of that dosage and needs more to help control the reflux. I would steer clear of supplements, personally.

  • @Rach521 Odd that you're at 1mL 3x's a day. We are doing just twice, which is nice since it's such nasty stuff. But it makes me wonder if an extra dose might be what he needs. Why couldn't we all just gotten the "easy happy" babies?
  • I had LO on 1.5 ml 2x a day. Seems like there must be some room for docs to adjust amounts per baby?

Keep in mind that meds won't stop the spitting up...just will make it not uncomfy. If you're expecting to see less spit up because of meds that prob won't happen.

LO is a massive spitter too. Don't let it limit you. Burp rags/ blankets in the floor help. We also travel with many bibs ( put them right over the straps of the carseat) and a few outfit changes.

Eta: I would also not use the supplements. We saw improve ts within 24 hrs once we got N's dose right. Be patient!

I'd call your pedi and see what they say about upping the dosage. I think DD is on a 3 x's a day schedule because her reflux came from an allergy so she's had these symptoms since she was a week old, which is uncommon. her nasal passages are still swollen so we're trying to get a few things under control at once. not sure if the 3 x's is a normal thing or just because we had a lot of issues in the beginning.

as for the "happy easy baby", I disagree. dispite all of her issues, DD is a very happy little lady. she's figuring out her world and we're working on a routine so each day is getting easier. although some days are more challenging than others, I wouldn't trade it for anything.

  • @Rach521  My apologies. Yesterday was a rough day. And I was wrong to presume that all AR babies ar miserable. Our little guy was just a cranky kid all the time until about 8 weeks even with meds. In the past week he's really perked up as well and is more playful and less fussy overall. But for a few weeks there, it was really rough. Today was definitely one of those better days for us though. LO slept somehow from 11-6. I woke up at 5 and freaked out, then pumped after making sure he was still breathing!
And yes, it does sound like you've got a bit extra on your plate that could be affecting dosage. We just have reflux/spitting up.
@Keags5496, I think we may have to do that with his straps too! We try to avoid putting him in his carseat until he's spit up the "normal" amount, but sometimes we don't luck out. We've been laying a washcloth underneath him to limit wear on his carseat fabric. If I were crafty I would totally get those cloth diapers, and cut them into strips to go around the straps and then sew on snaps. Someone should totally market that!
  • @rexgirl06‌ don't apologize, I know how frustrating it can be when LO is screaming in pain! I was just saying that not all reflux babies are miserable, didn't mean that you had to apologize or feel bad for saying that. it gets better every day that they're on the medicine, so hopefully that will help your LO's disposition soon :)
