Hello. My son is 7 months old and has been exclusively breastfeed ( and takes pumped bottles while I work) for 7 months. Until recently, I've had a good frozen stash, but now it is dwindling. All the milk I have stored now is dated back to October... so I'm not even sure its good, whats in it (did I have dairy that day before I knew not to.. etc), or if he'll even take it.
Im gone for two days next week ( my first trip away), and I need some advice on what to do with the milk. Is the older Milk Okay for him to drink? Should I increase his baby food supply so he doesnt need as much breast milk while I'm gone? If we have to supplement a few formula bottles, which formula is easiest to digest, and should we do 1/2 and 1/2 formula/BMilk...or just do maybe 1 formula bottle a day?
I really don't want to give him formula becuase he has HORRID constipation problems anyway.. so looking for good advice for anyone who has been in a similar situation.
Thanks!
Re: Traveling and worried about Frozen Stash..
Greetings! The typical storage recommendation for frozen breastmilk is 6 months (Reference: KellyMom and CDC Guidelines). If you're going to use that breastmilk from October, now is the time! Otherwise, you'll be throwing it out anyway...or looking into making some breastmilk soap.
I would say at 7 months, you can try to increase the solids, but I would suggest a backup plan as well. This isn't an evidence-based recommendation-- my little guys were so inconsistent and eradicate at that age with the solids. They would like it one day and refuse it the next. If you don't have enough frozen milk, you may want to get some formula as backup. It doesn't hurt to be prepared and then at least he does have an option if he finds it more comforting to feed while suckling. Unfortunately, I don't have a formula to recommend.
Re: Pumping while you are away, you may want to double check your hotel has a fridge. I made the mistake once assuming all hotels nowadays have fridges. : )
I hope this helps!

If you do need to supplement with formula, would do half & half like you said. Similac makes a formula called supplementation which is supposed to be the closest to breast milk and gentil. DS drank it ok for a few days when I went back to the hospital when he was barely a week old and I had no stash. It was difficult to go back to BF but we did it.
