New positions for a squirmy little one?

My son is now 7 1/2 months, he nurses about 5 times during the day (and then one 3am session) and our nursing sessions during the day have become difficult, especially when they are not directly before a nap.  I can tell that he's still hungry but he clearly doesn't want to keep nursing in the old 'football hold' or cross body positions we have been doing pretty much since day one.
One other position I have tried is to have him sitting up and leaning against my arm while nursing on that same side.  He seems to like that, but I was wondering if anyone who has a slightly older baby has any other positions?  Thanks!

Re: New positions for a squirmy little one?

  • Once my DS was more mobile, we started nursing in a similar way to what you described- I sat up straight, leaning against a pillow, and DS sat on my lap, facing me, with his legs on either side of my torso. That is still how how we nurse, unless we are in bed, in which case he either lies next to me with his head on my arm, or just flops on top of me. ;) curious to hear if anyone else has any other interesting nursing positions that they use with an older baby.

Interesting ideas! My LO is 9 months and I still put her down on her side on the Boppy in my lap to prop her up toward me. Then, for the distracted/squirmy nursing sessions, I drape something interesting over my shoulder (same side that she's nursing from) like her Taggies blanket or a lovie … something soft that she's fascinated by and can fiddle with while nursing. Keeps her on there much longer than if all she has to play with is my bra strap!
