How fast can you get 10oz?

I'm back at work and pumping. I can usually get 10 ounces pretty easy in the morning but I feel like its been taking longer lately. What's that about

Are you stressed?  Are you drinking enough water/eating enough calories?

Is your pump dying?  Is one of the pump components damaged (hole in the tubing, etc)?

It could really be any number of issues...but to answer your direct question, I get about 16 oz in the morning and it takes about 22-25 minutes.

ETA:  Probably should have mentioned that I do have an oversupply.  At one point I was pumping 50-60oz a day.  Now I'm pumping about 34-40oz a day with the biggest pump in the morning.

  • 10 oz is a lot!! Are you exclusively pumping? Average is about an ounce per hour.

Agree, I'm jealous!  If you are EPing, I'd love to know how you got your supply so far up.  I EP and I'm in the ounce an hour (give or take) range myself.

  • I agree with Murphy, there can be a lot of reasons. I get less when I'm stressed, skip breakfast and don't have enough water. My LO STTN most nights and I usually nurse on one side in the morning. When I pump to replace the morning feed, I usually get anywhere from 5-10oz on a double pump in about 15-20 min. I get less in the afternoon.
  • I get anywhere from 5-7 ounces in one pump session.  10oz is a lot!
  • Yeah, it sounds like you're doing great!  I wish I could get that much.   :)
  • I'm not pumping anymore because DD is 15 months, but it used to take me 3 pumping sessions to get 10 oz. I would have been so excited to get even 5 oz! The most I ever got at a time was 3 to 4 oz.

  • Wow! I didn't realize 10 oz was a lot for one session. But I'm curious how I would make enough milk otherwise cuz LO has already had 4 5 oz bottles today and its only 3:30pm. And she are off my right boob for her first feeding of the day so that was probably 3-4 oz. Thats already almost about 25 oz. I feel like I'd have to pump 1,000 times per day to make enough milk for her otherwise

You can't keep up because she's getting too much from bottles. I can't bring the direct link over on my phone but check out KellyMom for info on how much and how to pace bottle feeds.

My LO get a 4oz bottle every 3ish hrs. at daycare

  • Like the others say us, your baby is definitely being overfed, I'd work to slowly reduce bottle size. DD never took more than 16 oz in the 10 hours we are apart and usually only 12 oz. I pump twice a day at this point (10.5 months) and get 7 to 9 oz total.

  • My 9mo takes 15oz/day at the sitter (usually about 10 hours). I have never pumped that in a day. I usually pump 10-12oz/working day. My usual output from 1 session is around 3oz.

  • How fast can I get 10 ounces? At 19 months, I'd probably have to pump 6 times to get 10 ounces. hahaha.

Ah, the days of pumping where the milk came out fast and free. :)

  • But she sleeps 12 hours at night so she only gets about 25 oz in a 24 hour period. Do you still think she's overfed?

FWIW, my pedi says that, until one year old, the average milk intake is 24-32 oz/day.

As for pumping output, I usually get 6-7 oz in the AM, then about 5 oz in the PM. I then pump before bed to add in a little bit more as my LO drinks 12 oz from bottles total during the day while I work and then I leave a little extra for the nanny to use to mix with LO's oatmeal. LO is almost 9 months.

Good advice from PP re: paced bottle feeding and ensuring your baby isn't being overfed at daycare. It is possible that your LO needs more than the 25 oz in 24 hrs, but as others have mentioned, not all at once.
  • Sounds like a lot, and I get that too. Once I returned to work the am pump went from 12oz to 10oz over the first few weeks, then dropped again to 8-9oz and stayed there. I usually am done in 12-13 minutes.

That's not adding up though. Four 5 oz bottles by 3:30 plus she had already nursed so you're close to the 25 mark there, and since it was only 3:30 I'm guessing she ate 2-3 more times before bed? It's common for BF babies to be overfed at daycare, I'd make sure her care providers know how to bottle feed a breast fed baby.

    This.
You said baby had 20 ounces before 3:30pm and nursed in the morning. That's a day's worth of intake right there.
I would also consider doing a dream feed to reduce the pump stress...feed baby before you go to bed, or at least use that time to pump.  Going 12 hours without pumping or feeding will hurt your supply.

I feed one side at bed time, one side in MOTN and then the first side again in the am. So my one boob goes 12 hrs in between feeds. It hasn't hurt my supply but everyone is different. I think you boobs are adjusting to not needing such an oversupply. Also, how much "storage" do you have? I'm quite well endowed so my body can keep producing overnight w/I hurting my supply because I have the storage space for it.

Agree with you that nursing in the AM plus 20 oz by 3:30 sounds like a lot and seems to be due to daycare overfeeding.

However, if her LO is STTN and she's not running into any problems not nursing/pumping for 12 hours, it won't necessarily hurt supply. I can go from 730 pm - 730 am regularly without any issue. My supply is great and my 9 month old EBF LO is healthy.

According to my LC, everyone's "storage capacity" in her breasts is different. So depending on the mom and the baby's age, 12 hours may be fine and won't pose a supply problem.
