Fetal weight gain in the last month

I had a detailed ultrasound done last Wednesday (to check placenta position and size of baby) and got my results today.  Baby was measuring 7.5 lbs at the time of ultrasound.  My doctor told me that babies gain on average 1/2 every 2 weeks, and so estimated 8.5 pounds at birth.  Is that correct?  I thought I'd read somewhere that it's more like 1/2 lb every week.  Just curious what others have heard.  I'm really hoping for a VBAC, but the bigger the baby, the less likely it'll happen.

Re: Fetal weight gain in the last month

  • From what I have read, baby gains 1/2 pound a week until 38 weeks. After 38 weeks, the weight gain is not as significant

  • I've also read 1/2 lb a week.

My OB told me 1/2 lb a week (this conversation was at 34 weeks) with a planned next US at 38 weeks (baby girl was measuring 5 lb. 10 oz. at 34 weeks.) My fundal height is still measuring large so the growth scan is moved to next Monday at 37 weeks 2 days.

  • My Dr. told me yesterday at my 37w appointment that they are gaining 1/2 pound every week at this point.  I also am expected to have a big baby!

  • My OB also told me at my 34 week check-up that they usually continue to gain 1/2 lb per week. My "little" guy has been measuring 3 weeks ahead for a long time so he is going to be a chunk too!

  • I've read both half a pound per week but that weight gain usually slows after week 37 or 38
  • According to the doctors and US tech at my OB's practice, the baby gains 1/4 lb/wk between 30-36 weeks, then 1/2 lb/wk in the final month. Two techs at the elective place I visited this pregnancy said the same thing.

This is exactly what my MFM told me at my last growth scan.
