Cytotec

Sorry if this is a repeat question. Dr. wants me to go to L&D at 40 weeks 2 days to get a dose of Cytotec. When he checked me today he said my cervix is still very closed and not effaced. He is not trying to induce, just getting my cervix ready in case we have to induce at 41 weeks. Anyone else have this done? I know this drug is controversial but I can only find info on it from 10-15 years ago. Anyone know about any newer info on the drug? Thanks!

Re: Cytotec

  • The biggest thing I've seen is that it has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for any obstetrical use in the United States. It's been approved for other uses, just not induction. I'm baffled that they are able to use it "off label" like this, but it's true, there aren't a lot of newer articles/research on it.
Good luck with your decision making process!!

  • No medical reason to induce, they just don't "let" their patients go past 41 weeks. I will be monitored for three hours in L&D when they do give me the Cytotec. I just am unsure about the drug itself. Thanks for your input ladies!
  • That seems weird to me, too. If he wants to induce at 41 weeks the night before is plenty of time for cervical ripening agents. In the mean time you could go into labor all on your own!

  • Your doctor doesn't let you do things. You let them do things to you.

I agree! That is why I said "let."
  • I'm not sure what the rationale was with my OB because I didn't wind up needing cervical ripening, but she would have done cervadil if I was barely dilated/effaced, and cytotec if things had started and just needed a push. I was far enough along for induction that we just started with pitocin though, so I never dug into the issue.

  • The intetnet is not your friend with this medication.
I was induced with cytotec at 39wks, and freaked myself out after reading the internet. However, I had to use my rational nurse thinking and remember off, label uses are common (i take a seizure medication for migraines). Then I put my trust in my dr amd nurses, because that is what I hired them for and I am a huge believer that google makes everyone think they know better these days.
My cytotec experience was fine.I did the oral dosing becausd my cervix was way up there. After the first dose, nothing. 4hrs later I took a 2nd dose and had my water broken. I started having too many contractions after that which was fixed with a fluid bolus. Then I started on pitocin and had a baby! My uterys did not rupture as the internet swore it would.
It did work very quick though, so I dont understand doing it days in advance. And I def think its one of those benefits outweigh risks type situations. In my case the risk of continuing the pregnany preeclamptic was greater than the risk of taking cytocec (though once again, the internet ans this board tend to disagree)Goodluck!

  • I don't really have anything against cytotec, I just think taking it so early is really weird.

  • I would be wary of taking it to ripen your cervix but not induce. In my own experience I was given 2 oral doses at 38weeks 4days for induction and it sent me in to labor. My water broke about 6 hours after the second dose and I didn't need pitocin or another CRA.
  • I was induced with cytotec 2 weeks ago. They did two doses vaginally 4 hours apart and my water broke by itself 2 hours later and I had a baby 8 hours after that. I wouldn't feel comfortable going home after having cytotec. Just two doses and baby was here. But overall it was really effective and I would do it again if I needed to be induced
