Montessori?

Anyone have any experience with Montessori school?  We are moving to Houston next month, and are looking for childcare/preschools for DD and baby on the way due 9/10.  Our good friends there have their son in Montessori and rave about the place, but the concept is new to us.  Any thoughts?

Re: Montessori?

  • DS goes to a Montessori elementary school. I think it's fantastic! There are several books about it, see if you can skim through a few.

  • Can someone explain to me what a Montessori school is?  Is it a private Catholic school?  We have a Montessori high school here in MA and I've thought that was the name of someone who bought the school.

Nooo, it's independent, individual based learning.
DS doesn't have desks and all that. There's stations, some tables, rugs, a loft, couches where they do their work. Each student has x amount of daily work, they do it at their pace, with or without other students or the teachers help. He's in first grade, but he has 1-3 in his class, a total of 21 students. He has the same teacher for 1-3 and then 4-5. They gave stations, like science, math (they do old school hands on math), life sciences... They also start learning from a whole. They learn about the universe, the solar system, the earth, the continents, the countries, the states, then the towns, in that order. ( the same with math, he's already learned cubes, and all of that so when he starts more complex math he will have that foundation)They learn why we have bees, why we need to respect plants, animals...
In K they had an art area, a kitchen area, a puzzle area, plus the others.
Let me google some images quick.

  • Hmmm, sounds interesting.  I might have done better in school if I had this sort of school learning atmosphere.  I might bring it up for Skye, well in a few years.  LOL
  • They aren't all private, ours is a charter. Not everyone can go though, there's a lottery since they only accept 42 kids per grade. His school goes from K-12 and at 6th it transitions to a more traditional setting.

I said the same thing! It's been around for over 100 years in Europe and decades in larger US cities. I think it's really cool. DS does sometimes have an issue with actually getting his work done. He loves science and art and will focus in those and slack in some if the other areas. He's getting better though.

  • I have a eye and hand coordination issue, which for reasons i don't understand, affects the party of my brain that handles math.  Numbers and math have and will always be a challenge for me. Thankfully it was caught early on by a caring teacher, but I don't know what would have happened if that weren't the case, it sounds like schools like this can help with children were like me.

The Montessori school near us only starts taking kids at 3. We probably would have sent her there if not for the age thing. I believe Montessori refers to the style of teaching. More hands on go at your own pace. I definitely like that idea for young kids, not sure how I feel about it for older kids because I didn't even know there were schools like that for older kids and haven't really thought about it.

  • I went to a montessori school for pre-k/K and then an honest, little red, one-room schoolhouse in the country for 1st-4th grade and it was amazing! I have some pretty amazing memories from that place and would love for Killian to go but sadly it closed down years ago. If you have an opportunity to allow your child to experience that kind of learning environment, jump on it!

  • DD1 is at a Montessori school  They have infant care through 3rd grade  She's doing great there.  DD2 will start there when she's 3 months.  At these ages, not sure how the montessori method is benefitting them, but it is a very caring and hands-on environment and they promote the older kids helping the younger, which I like.

  • We do homeschool montessori. We can't afford to send the kids to a regular montessori preschool. I would if we could though. We even do lessons with Cade. It's more than just learning math and science. Montessori is about teaching them how to basic life skills. Like, with Cade we work on things like pouring things into cups or bowls, blowing his nose, picking out clothes, ect. I love it and I so wish I could do it full time for their school. We just cannot afford it.
