Lets talk about puke!

Fun subject. How many of you BTDT mamas threw up during labor? I'm not talking about MS returning in the 3rd tri, but actual labor induced upchucking.

I didn't realise it was common, but apparently it is. Is it worth asking for an anti-sickness med, or will no shits be given by me at that point anyway?

I personally did not puke during labor. I was induced, given pitocin, got an epidural....no adverse side effects, luckily.

  • I did not either time. First labor was induced and I wasn't allowed to eat for a long time, although I never felt nauseated. Second labor was not induced, but I did feel a little nauseated after my epi. I remember thinking they were going to send me home when I got to L&D because the woman who came in at the same time as me was vomiting and screaming. She scared me!
I don't think you need to ask for any anti emetics unless you're feeling sick.

  • Also want to add- got an epidural with my first pregnancy as well, but had no issues at all.
I think the epi was turned way up my second time.

  • I heard the gas+air can make you queasy. I accept that it may be inevitable, but i'd like to avoid adding puking to the list of things i'll be dealing with at the time. Plus, i really don't want DH to have to hold my hair back! He's never seen me puke and i intend to keep it that way. Shit my pants, yes. Puke, no.

  • I became incredibly nauseated just before my c-section. I don't know if it was caused by nerves, meds, my empty stomach, the long day of Pitocin contrax, or a combination of all the above, but my anesthesiologist fixed me up good. He put Pepcid (or maybe Zantac?) and Phenergan into my IV and I was fine after that. NBD.

  • I did---twice. I always remember thinking that is one thing they never mentioned in any of the classes we took. I threw up early on and remember the nurse saying, "Oh that will get you dialated a few cms." And it did. Then right after she was born...... everyone was all focused on her and I could feel me getting sick. Threw up all over myself. Part of that might be the swigs of ginger ale I was taking during labor that maybe shouldn't have. They just tasted like water from the gods at that stage of the game. :)
  • I should add the first puke was before I got any drugs...... I was not induced. My sis in law and her sis in law both puked before delivery also. I think it scared my DH more than anything. At that point him seeing me puke was least of my worries.
  • I just hate puking.  Hate.  That is all.

  • Honestly I can't remember. I was induced at 5 pm. I spent most of that night on the toilet. I think I threw up a few times but I could be wrong. I have a memory of asking for a new basin so I think I must have. This is why you write your birth stories down when they are still fresh! I'm an easy puker -
I throw up when stressed or before tests or just randomly if I've exerted myself. So labor definitely is prime time for me to vom.

I three up three times.  the first after 18 hours of every two minute contractions an no drugs.  The second, I was told, was when he moved past my stomach and the third was after he was born.

"it's a boy!!!!"  "BARF".  (not because it was a boy, but that was the timing.)

Most people do puke during labor. Digestion shuts down as its not your body's priority, its doing a lot of other work.

Med free labor it is usually as you reach transition.

If planning on epidural it's usually after you get it because your bp can drop rapidly.

Just eat light things that you won't mind seeing again. Bananas, oatmeal, etc

  • I did, but it was all bile and acid because I want allowed anything to eat one my induction started. Needless to say, I'll be eating during labor this time.
  • I am not a puker.... I'm terrified of it. When I need to I will get so worked up freaking out that I can't do it. Unless I'm wasted of course. Maybe when I'm in labor I won't care but I'm more worried about the puking than the contractions and the pushing. :-/

  • I've gotten so content with throwing up. I used to be scared of it! I would think during that "transition" point during labor...

I didn't, but was sure I would since I had bad m/s the first tri. I did get an epi at aroumd 7 cm though, so I don't know if that helped or not.

  • I did. It was after two hours of pushing and I was "taking a break" bc my contractions had slowed so they started Pitocin to get them going again. I was out of it... I had been awake all night and was drugged from a sleeping pill they gave me to help me sleep the night before (yeah it didn't help bc my water broke and I was contracting every two min). I had an epidural and I had had a grape Popsicle. My DH handed me a cup just in time as I slurred that I felt like I was going to be sick.
  • So it sounds like it's hit or miss really. I'm hoping to get by on pethidine and have no intention of a natural labor (wimp, I know). I'm gonna keep small, bland snacks and energy drinks with me to sip slowly. I guess the best I can do is be prepared!

Yes! But also keep in mind that depending on the type of delivery, you may not be allowed to eat (once they started my induction I was sips and chips and couldn't have food til after delivery, which was probably about 20 hours later); grab something to eat beforehand if it's an option. :)

  • I didn't. I had no pain meds until after I'd been pushing for 4 hours. I did feel queasy at one point and thought I was going to be sick, but I managed to keep it under control. I hate throwing up with passion so I was very glad I didn't. I'm really hoping that I don't this time either.

  • I did, but it wasn't until the aftermath. I was on mag and couldn't eat anything 24hrs after I had DS so it was all stomach acid and bile. I remember asking... "Soooo if I'm going to throw up where should I do it?"
  • I did quite a few times, and I had a med free home birth. Ina Mays book covers how puking can actually be part of the process for some peoples bodies, it certainly was for mine even before transition. I puked so much for a of first and second toe I didn't even care.

  • This girl. Bile + acid. Whenever they laid me flat on my back to do internal checks. Absolutely horrible.

  • I had it really bad with my late loss. I delivered the baby without really trying (contractions were there but I certainly wasn't feeling any desire to push) and when they got me into a post partum room to deliver the placenta they discovered that I still wasn't fully dilated- so they gave my cyto-something (little sticks) to help the cervix along so I could avoid a D&C.

I had no pain meds and the contractions never got scream worthy- but after an hour or so of the sticks being placed- my blood pressure plummeted, all of my limbs started shaking, and I couldn't stop constantly vomiting bile for about half an hour. (Vomiting up everything else I'd eaten that day was what kicked off the water breaking and contractions)  Doc and nurse informed me after a check that I had started the transition phase and it would pass eventually. And it did. But that part really really sucked. It was, however, over fairly quickly.

I'm really not worried about it this time around though. I'm sure it'll be as bad or worse with a full term baby and serious contractions- but there's this mental space you get into where things that would normally give you the heebie jeebies just don't seem to register as weird/bad/strange.

I do plan on wearing my hair in a braid or a bun though- I don't want to have to deal with hair at all while trying to get through labor. DH didn't have to hold my hair back, but he did have to hold the vomit baggie. Again, it didn't even register as something I didn't want him to be doing at the time. I was just grateful I had somewhere to vomit that wasn't all over myself. And it certainly didn't make DH think any less of me. Actually he's been even more supportive this pregnancy with my weak stomach. He will rub my back gently, get me napkins, and help clean up any messes afterwards. It's not something I'm proud to have him see- but we signed up for better or worse, sickness and health.
