Infant growth concerns??

So, DD is 4 months old and a peanut. She was born 7lb 14oz and 20.5 inches long. At 2 months she was 16th percentile for weight and 17th for height. Now, at 4 months, she's 12lb 10oz (17%), but only 23 inches (4%). I'm not super concerned and neither is her pedi. If she continues to fall in height (so, pretty much off the charts) at her 6 month appointment, though, he'll want to do some testing. Even though her body is tiny, she has a pretty big noggin' (87%).

We do have short statured family members and I'm not exactly tall myself, so she very well might just be a petite little thing. There were some slight concerns with her short femur length and large head on ultrasound measurements, but not enough to warrant any special testing.

My question is: have any of you dealt with length but not weight concerns? Did you have any testing done? What type and what was the outcome?

Thanks ladies!

  • My son dropped with both, but was also born bigger.  They tested his growth hormone with came up low or low normal.  We saw an endocrinologist and it turned out that he was fine.  Just shouldn't have been such a big baby.  I hope everything is ok!!

  • My ds is 15 months. At his one year appt, the pedi said if he didn't grow in height, she would refer us to an endocrinologist for testing. Luckily at his appt yesterday he had grown an inch and a half and she wasn't concerned. I understand your worry, though. I try to remember that all kids grow at different rates. I think ds got my short genes :-/

  • My first 2 kids were 95+% for height and 5% for weight.
They are both tall and thin.

DS2 is 95+% for height and 50% for weight (so far at 1 month).
    It's weird actually.

Kids, like adults, vary in size and shape.
    I wouldn't be worried about a short-lightweight kid.

This didn't happen to my child so I don't know all the details but a friend from preschool just had her daughter run through a bunch of tests because she wasn't growing taller. I believe her little one is about 2. She ended up having a thyroid issue and has started treatment for it.

I have a thyroid disorder and my endo always asked to make sure she was growing well in utero.  I really think she's just going to be a little lady, but that's definitely something I'll keep in mind. Thanks!

  • All of my kids were born at 19.25" to 20". DD1 (5.5) and DS (13 mo) were average weight for a really long time, DS still is and DD1 only fell in the last year or so. DD2 was smaller weight wise and has stayed that way. All three quickly dropped from average height to low percentiles. Both DDs are about 4th percentile and DS is 6th. I'm 5'1" and DH is 5'6".
Their pedi wasn't concerned until DD1 fell a little at her 5 year appt. We did a growth scan (just an xray of the hands/wrists) to determine if she was growth delayed. She is and should be about as tall as me, but she'll get there later than her peers. If she wasn't growth delayed, then we would have been sent for more testing.

  • Thanks for sharing @JenS2203‌. I really hope it's nothing we ever have to explore, but it's good to hear others' experiences.
