Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Penicillin Allergy

We found out the hard way yesterday that our 14-month old is now allergic to amoxicillin, and therefore penicillin and all the other cillins.  She is fine, just covered in ugly red hives (just in time for the Easter pictures), but it really surprised us because she's taken amoxicillin before with no incident, and this was literally her 10th and final day of taking the pink stuff for her ear infection.

What surprised me was how many people from daycare and my office have shared that their kids are also allergic to the cillins.  I never realized that it was so common.  Just curious, has it always been this way?

Re: Penicillin Allergy

  • My sister is the same way. She didn't show the signs until she was in highschool. She and my other sister, her twin were staying with me for the summer and was just put on some for an ear infection or something. So here I was 22, my husband was deployed, freaking out rushing her to the hospital. She looked terrible.

She's almost 30 now and knows exactly what she can have. It's tricky, but really not terrible.

  • My DS is like this too! No issue with meds but at the end of the cycle gets a red rash so we now give him Omnicef for ear infections. Very strange, i know....apparently its just a side effect of the medicine, not an allergy (same as loose bowls, etc) but i still dont give it to him, not worth it.
  • My son is also allergic to amoxicillin and didn't get hives until day 9/10.  It was surprising because my husband and I aren't allergic to anything.

  • DH is 29 and is allergic to the cillins.  He was one of a handful of kids in his schools with that allergy (suburb town, 300 people in his high school class).

  • I took an allergic reaction to amoxycillin in college where not only did I breakout in hives, but I also experienced anaphylaxis shock (throat closed over), so I can't take penicillin either.

My older two kids have been on amoxycillin with no issues. My youngest went on a presciption med for the very first time at 14 months of age (amoxycillin) and broke out in hives that night. I've heard there is such a thing as amoxycillin rash and that chances are your child could take a dose at another time and have no reaction. I'll leave that decision up to my pedicatrician, though.

I think it is becoming more common, though, as we are over-medicating our kids. :(
