LO and gas pain

My 1 and a half week old has been feeding (bf, no bottle) great, not fussy throughout the day and has been needing regular diaper changes... but when 10/11pm rolls around and I bf him before swaddling him for bed, he gets painful gas pains. I've tried everything from massaging his tummy to bicycling his legs and nothing seems to work. Last night my husband and I worked together and LO finally managed to start tooting away around 2am.

Calling the ped today to get some advice but wondering if anyone here has some experience with this? Any advice? Did you use gas drops or any other remedies that seemed to help?

My DD is quite gassy, and it creates some angry sounding cries. She often wants back on the boob for a few minutes where she'll barely eat, but it's enough to stimulate her digestive tract and push some gas and poop out.

if your pedi has any good tips, please share!

  • Gripe water helped so much with my DS! Gripe water and the bicycles
  • Another suggestion that worked with both my kids is to lay them on your legs/knees on their bellies and kind of roll them around, pat their backs, etc to get the gas moving.

  • We are suffering from gas here too. It started out only at night like you but now she has two hour long fits during the day too. We use the gripe water, gas drops and colic calm throughout the day and night. We also do the massage, bicycles, laying on tummy and burping for long periods of time. Some times it works and some times it doesn't. We have had to supplement a little formula at night just so I can get some rest. She was using my nipples as soothers and refuses to take a paci. So far the Similac gentle stuff seems to help her without gassing her up too much. I'm not much help but wanted you to know you aren't alone. Hope the dr can help.
  • @beautifulstr13‌ sometimes they take a paci better if it's wet. Worked for mine and gave my nipples a little time off.

Do you need a ped's approval to switch to a sensitive formula if your baby is gassy? Or can you just switch on your own? I supplement with bf.
  • Well called the pedi... and instead of talking to him, I have to talk to a nurse and she had no input at all and suggested I wait until our two week appt on Monday to ask. I asked about gripe water and she said "I don't have any experience with that" so I asked about gas drops and her response was "sure, you can try that."

    Gee thanks.
  • I googled for the same reason this morning. Here is what I found- https://kellymom.com/parenting/parenting-faq/gassybaby/

As far as I know you don't. We never needed approval to give any kind of formula they sale in stores. I assume if you need an extra special kind you can get a prescription from the dr. I'm sure our dr doesn't love us giving her formula period but this mommy needed a break. I'm still considering switching to formula full time.

I'll try this. I've tried putting breast milk on it and some sugar water so I guess that's considered wet. She acts like I'm trying to kill her when I give her one. I'm going to talk to the pedi when we see him next. I hate to force it on her but my boobs were getting sore and I am just so exhausted from feeding constantly.
  • We used gripe water with DD and it seemed to help. If it was really bad, we'd try they rectal thermometer to try and induce a bowel movement or toot.

  • Are you ingesting a large amount of dairy? I read on kellymom.com that cows Milk is hard to digest and causes gas. I have restricted my dairy intake to just yogurt and my LO seems to be less gassy
  • We stayed up half the night with DS when we first came home from the hospital. I finally called the pediatricians line around 1:00 am. They said it is safe to give gas drops. She suggested Mylicon over Gripe water. We have tried both and Mylicon definitely works better for us!
  • Hugs to mamas with gassy babies! Fingers crossed, but my LO hasn't had it bad yet. A nurse I saw on Wednesday confirmed that tummy time can help since it puts pressure on the bowels. I imagine it's uncomfortable for them, at first, but the mechanics of it makes sense, I guess. I hope your LOs get relief soon!
  • My pedi says that gas collects through out the day and late at night can cause problems, she said to really be diligent about burping all day

  • I read the same thing about dairy so I've limited that.

I've also been super cautious of burping all day so we'll see how it goes tonight.

Regarding the gas drops - do you give the dosage before or after a feeding? Planning on using it for his last feeding - he's been passing gas all day.
  • We have used it after and it works fine but I see where some people give it before to prevent...I would like to know which is more effective also
