Soothies

I remember there was a post a while ago about soothies and switching LO to orthodontic pacifiers. I've been trying to get LO to take something other than a soothie for a while, so far big fat fail with mams and nuks. I'm planning to try latex nuks but haven't found them in the right size. I'm curious, if you were able to get LO to take another brand which one worked for you?

Re: Soothies

  • I missed that post. So, soothies are "bad"? Lo can't keep them in her mouth anyway, Tommy Tippee and Nuk for us.

  • LO was using soothies until I read Tlex's PSA. I picked up Avent free flow yesterday and so far LO is taking it just fine.

  • My DS loved the gumdrop ones(not so much the soothies) and we're transitioning to the Tommie Tippie ones because he seems to like them too. He will also take the avent ones, but everything else gets spat out.

  • My DS has been switching between the soothies and the Chicco NaturalFit which is made out of the same or very similar material as soothies.

  • I thought soothie was good until 3 months? I have NUK & tommie tippy just haven't used them... so my wubbanubb is junk now? :(

@BlueDot818‌ I've seen people re-sew the animal onto other pacis!

  • LO won't take anything but a soothie. I've tried. Multiple times.
My pediatrician isn't worried- I'm not worried.

  • I finally got DD to take Avent 0+. Now she'll take Nuk as well.

  • Thanks for the input ladies. Sounds like there are several that have worked for people, hopefully DS will like one of your suggestions!

And I don't think the soothies are "bad", but I had intentions of using the orthodontic ones from the beginning just so it was not something I would worry about. We had a short lived latch issue so stuck with soothies until it resolved, now that's all he wants. If soothies is all he ends up taking I will just stick with it.

@BlueDot818‌ LO has a wubbanub too, love that thing. If I can get him to use another paci I will still probably interchange the ortho/ wubbanub with soothie until he is older and then phase it out. Assuming he cooperates!

  • Sorry but I say screw that. Baby gets whatever paci baby likes. Our dentist said that extended/constant use is definitely bad with ANY paci but that all 4 of his kids used a paci (each a different shape and not necessarily orthodontic) with no unusual damage to their teeth. He said that people are quick to say if a child needs braces its because they used a paci or sucked thumb or whatever but there are plenty of kids that never took a paci as a child (including me) who still needed braces. His concern is more with brushing/flossing and limiting sugary foods.

This. In theory, the ortho ones are prob a tad better if your kid is using it all the time and until they are older. Most kids are going to need braces anyway. A pacifier will be taken away well before a thumb/finger/hand will. A paci will not cause the same pressure a thumb will on the roof of the mouth. My LO will stick with soothies/wubbanub until we take the paci away.
  • J2 takes latex Nuk pacis. I have Mams to try, but he seems to love latex.

OP I have been more successfully with transitioning to the Nuk when LO is a little drowsy with sleep in the night. I am assuming in the half asleep state perhaps baby does not think much of the difference. Once they take it a few times it will be easier to transition at other times as well.
  • Anecdotal, but my sister sucked her thumb until she was 15, no lie... perfect teeth. I never did, quit the paci by a year... my teeth are so bad that 6 years of orthodontia couldn't fix it, they went right back once the braces came off (and yes. I wore my retainers religiously... until they stopped fitting because the teeth moved anyway). I think some people will just need braces.

  • LO uses Mam because that is what the hospital gave her, but DD and DS were addicted to Soothies. When I say addicted I mean the 'Suckie Fairy' had to come and collect them at around 2 and leave a gift in place.  It was bad.  They are now almost 5 and the dentist says their teeth are perfect.  I agree with PP….as long as they're gone by a certain age it is ok.
Also, it is amazing what lips/gums can do also.  I sucked my thumb until 7.  My dentist gave me till 10 to see if I would need braces.  My lip actually pushed my buck teeth back into place.  Never needed braces, retainer, etc.

  • ^#(^ peeps be passionate about their soothies. Knock your socks off folks no judgements here, it's always your own call as a parent. Just sharing what the pediatric ortho recommended, nor sure most people would have met with one.

And @hopeful0328‌ saying most kids will need braces is a bit dramatic.

@TyrannosaurusLex‌, not being dramatic, I'm a dental hygienist and have been in the field for over 15 yrs. Most kids will need and benefit from braces, regardless of paci/thumb use. Certainly a paci or thumb can cause that need to be greater.

  • My LO isn't a huge paci user so I think I'm comfortable with sticking with the smoothie/wubbanub. He won't take the others I've tried, and rarely takes the smoothie anyway. I think he likes cuddling with the wubbanub monkey more than the paci aspect of things. I a green with Rosie, in the pick your battles situation.

  • I definitely didn't mean to offend the soothie crowd! I would just prefer to have LO use the ortho ones for a number of reasons. I agree that if they are not using it all day long or till they are in kindergarten it probably won't make or break their dentition.

Being that I was that kid who had a paci until they were 4, just in case this DS follows in those footsteps (not that I plan on letting him) I was hoping to have him use an ortho one. That and he can't keep the soothie in his mouth without the wabbanub, which he has a tendency to swat out of his mouth anyway. Just looking for some options that might work better for us :-)

    Need and benefit are different.
I'm a bit curious to know how much of the "benefit" is for purely cosmetic reasons.

  • @StephCammie511‌ and @TyrannosaurusLex‌

While I'm sure there are some orthodontists out there who are doing things for profit, I certainly hope this is not the norm. More kids get braces today because they have realized the health benefits, not just cosmetic. I myself never had braces because my teeth look nice and are straight. They are not lined up correctly in the back, which causes me to severely grind my teeth, causing damage to my teeth, as well as TMJ problems. This is just one example. I'm not saying every kid/parent will choose to get braces, but most will benefit from improved bite/function.
  • My LO will only take. Soothie and the cheep non fancy brown nipples for her bottles.
  • I was given a pack of soothies, they were vanilla scented.  That was weird.

Yeah, I have nothing else to add to this conversation, the Feb kid won't take a pacifier and the July kid won't give his up.

  • Honestly, growing up, I thought ALL kids got braces. It seemed that way in my school anyway. But yeah, most of it was probably for cosmetic reasons... But I still thought that was the norm? Maybe I just lived in a really shallow town? Is that not the norm in other places?

Ha! Because babies like vanilla?? Agreed, very weird.

The ones they have us in the NICU were vanilla scented. I thought it was weird too

It was not typical in the upper class high school( 16 yo driving BMWs, Hummers, Farraris), nor the middle class middle school.

I had them to to correct numerous things.

I think it was @ivedonethisb4‌ who did a tutorial in the last soothies thread and even included pics?

I think it may have been @MoxyByProxy‌ ?

  • I undid the stitches that hold the soothie, and replaced it with a small strap with strong Velcro by hand stitched the mouth closed with the strap in place.
