Medela vs Ameda

I am a first time mom and my insurance company will cover either of the above breast pumps at 100% due to the new women's health care reform laws. I have been reviewing the models online and can't find any concrete information as to which pump may be better. I want to exclusively breast feed for the first 6-12 months and work from home. I will be having to send our child to daycare, so will need to pump during the day while I work. Is one model better than the other? Has anyone tried both models and if so, which do you prefer? I really appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks in advance ladies!!

Re: Medela vs Ameda

  • I'm a FTM too, so until I start pumping this summer I have no firsthand experience, but I've been working with a lactation consultant who said she could not recommend medela strongly enough and my ob used the medela herself, so I went with that. Just got the medela pump in style with the metro bag.

  • I've used both. On the hospital I used Ameda (hospital grade) but I was given a Medela by my insurance. I like Medela more because I don't have to constantly change suction while the Medela automatically changes after 2 mins to better express milk.

As far as power, I don't feel much of a difference.
  • I asked the lactation specialists where I work which one I should choose. They suggested the Medela instyle pump. I ordered it- hopefully I will like it :) I've heard good things!
  • Thanks ladies!!
