Postpartum "shakes"

Has anyone experienced these? I gave birth to my DS yesterday, and have since had 2 bouts of extreme shaking/shivering of my entire body. It lasts 10-15 min. The nurse said that's a common side effect of the anesthesia used during c-sections. I had it after my DD's birth as well, but it didn't seem as extreme.

Re: Postpartum "shakes"

  • I did, nurse told me its my body getting all the pregnancy hormones back to normal level. If you are worried you should definitely call your doctor.

  • I've also experienced this (I had an unmediated birth). My OB told me it was completely normal and should stop within a day or two.
  • I had shakes after an unmedicated birth everytime i went to the bathroom. It only lasted two days.

  • Yes, I had mine maybe 12 hrs after my csec. It was the middle of the night I woke up shaking. I had it last time during labor with my son. I was told it was normal so I didn't freak too much this time. I also had the crazy itching someone mentioned as the spinal wore off.

  • I had the shakes for a while after my epidural/vaginal birth with DS and I had shakes briefly even after this one and she was unmedicated vaginal.

  • I totally thought this was about milk shakes. Shows where my mind is. And yes, I had the shakes for about a day after delivery. So much so that I had some muscle soreness from it (in addition to the soreness from pushing).
  • I didn't have the shakes but I had some horrible itching for 2 days after my section.

  • The nurses told me the best way to control the shakes is skin to skin with baby
