Working Moms

Intro. and questions

Hi! I've never posted here before, so here's a little background info.
I have twin DDs and 2 SDs that are with us EOW.  I work full time. One
wk 36hrs, one week 48 hours.  I'd love to stay at home but right now
it's financially better for me to work.

My question is how do I approach possibly working less hours with my boss?
Everyone else that is in the same position as me works the same amount of hours.
I feel like that makes it a little harder since there isn't really anyone else that works less than full time.

Thanks for any input :)

Re: Intro. and questions

  • Welcome! I simply asked my boss if there's as any way for me to reduce my schedule because the hours I worked prior to being a mother just weren't going to work for me. She was very receptive and actually gave me a few different options. I was shocked!

Long story short - you never know what your options are unless you ask. Good luck and I hope you and your boss can come up with something that works for you.

  • I think its best to approach your boss with a plan and then see what they are willing to do. Like Maybe "I would like to work Mon-thurs 7-5 and have fridays off." That gets you to 40 hrs every week. Or even propose working from home a day or 2 a week if thats feasible in your field. I think if you approach them with a plan of attack it puts the thought in their head that it could actually work and they are more willing to work with you.
  • I went to my boss with a written proposal laying out a few options. In it I explained why these arrangements were good for the company not just for me. He actually suggested a few other even more flexible options and we were able to come to a good agreement.
  • Thanks Ladies!
