Bedtime ? For BTDT

I have a stupid FTM question about bedtime. LO goes to bed between 6:30 and 7. I notice her tired signs around 5:30, so we do dinner and bath starting then. Many people, like my parents and DH, think I should be pushing her to stay up later since she's getting older. I realize some of dh's reasoning for this is because he doesn't get any time with her before bed since he is just getting home from work when it's time for her bottle. Plus, we can never do anything after like 5:30 or 6 because of her early bedtime. My parents think that the later she goes to bed the later she will wake up. The few times she has gone to bed later, she still wakes at the same time. I guess my question is: should I be trying to transition her (slowly) to a later bedtime because she is getting older? I just figure why fix something that isn't broken?

  • Well my LO thinks bedtime is at 10 so keep doing what you're doing. I never let his naptime or bedtime change our plans, though.

  • You're right....with my older kids it never mattered what time they went to bed, they always got up at the same time!! It's hard to push their bedtime, when they're ready they're ready.

  • That's what I figured. I just needed a little confirmation!

  • Nothing seems to change LO waking up around 630am for the day. 8pm is normal bedtime, but we've done closer to 7pm on occasion and it doesn't change anything.

  • If I were cool and knew how to .gif I'd post the one of Steve Carell going "noooooooo!" :)

Typically the rule of thumb is "early to bed, late to rise."  Especially if you are going off their sleepy cues, you are doing the right thing.  My almost three year old still goes to bed around 7-7:30.

  • I wouldn't change something that is working, although it does suck for your DH.

  • I moved my oldest bedtime to 8pm when she was 2 1/2.  Don't try to fix something that isn't broke.  only reason why I moved her bedtime is because she all of a sudden was waking up at 5AM.  not cool.  I was willing to adjust to her sleeping later one hour or going to bed earlier by one hour.  you kind of have to toy with it.  If your LO is showing signs of tiredness at 5:30, no way pushing it out will help.  Will just make it harder for her to sleep at night.  With DD2, her bedtime starts at 6:30.  Maybe if i'm running late, my husband sees her a total of 15 minutes.  It's unfortunate, but whatever is best for the babe, not him.

  • Dd has the exact same story, most of the time we fight her to keep her up until 6. I would not change a thing, although it does suck that u cant really go out late if it is once a month we just drag her along or find a sitter. I agree don't fix whats broken
