Holy Cow -- NBR

So, this could probably have gone in the spam thread but I wanted to be a special one.

DH has 2 offers on his plate for jobs.  One with the pipefitters (he has final interview 5/6 at 6:30 pm) The other with an insulation company he has that offer on the table and starts 5/5.  We're going to have a choice to make.  I can feel that coming.  Does he stay with the company that he starts at 5/5 or go with the pipefitters?

As I've mentioned before the pipefitters has a 5 year apprenticeship first year we'll be making $4/hr less but then right back up to normal the following year.  I'm thinking we need to get the house on the market now, sell it and live with my parents that first year (they have 3 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs that they are not using and we'd pay rent) Then we could live fine and still save up to build our house the following year.  The ending payout for the pipefitters is $56/hr (with beneifits 38/hr on check) So in 5 years he'd be making about 80k flat w/o overtime.

The other job, isn't a huge pay raise, but he works 3 days on 3 days off, Sunday's are always double time.  He can work his way up but it's all based on seniority and he'd be low man... however, there's no giant pay cut for a year either.

Both have excellent benefits.

I'm excited for him, I want him to chose whichever one makes him happy.

  • That's great!

  • The pipe fitters is what you've been pushing for, right? I think it sounds like the best fit in the long run :)

Could he take the job that starts on 5/5 and still do his final interview on 5/6 and then if he gets in with the pipe fitters he can just tell the new job that he found a better offer? That's a crappy thing to do, I guess? But, you'd just be doing what's best for your family.
  • Ugh I hate making choices like this! Sounds like you really can't go wrong. Sorry I'm no help, Good luck!

  • Yay!! I've been waiting for this update! I think he should go with the pipefitters because that's the best long term. A year is really just a drop in the bucket and you're not taking into account the O/T he would be getting even in that first year. It may not be a decrease at all.

  • I tend to agree with you @Meimsx.  I think he is going to do what @Asbromle said and take the other job though, just incase the interview on the 6th with the pipefitters doesn't go well.  Either way, change is in the works!  Change for the better!
