3rd Trimester

36 weeks and baby is posterior

There's a ton of info on when to get concerned about baby being breech but less on when to take steps if baby is posterior. Is it time to see a chiropractor? I'm already doing the spinningbabies stuff and so far no luck.... Will ask my MW at the next appt but don't want to wait if time is of the essence.

Re: 36 weeks and baby is posterior

  • My daughter was born sideways- facing one of my legs. It made absolutely no difference in the deliver process.

Posterior isn't quite as serious as breech. You can still have a successful vaginal delivery with a sunny side up baby and most practitioners have no problem allowing you to attempt it. That's probably why there's less information about it.

I have no experience with it but have read that it tends to lead to more back labour, and being able to move around during labour and birth is helpful because positions like being on all fours can make it easier.

  • Crawl across the floor on your hands and knees whenever you can.
  • Thanks ladies. I am planning a natural birth and so optimal positioning is important. My first labor was very long, likely due to her head not being in the right place. I should add that the MW checked me last week due to lots of contractions and though they weren't doing much to change my cervix, she is at -2.

  • I've heard the same thing about being able to move to find comfortable positions as much as possible in labor.  And that hands and knees is usually what is most comfy.  And that sunny side up causes more back labor, and maybe more difficulty in pushing, but doable.

  • My DS turned from posterior after I went to the chiropractor and got adjusted.  I went into labor that night, too.  I certainly don't think the chiro put me into labor, but I think the position change helped!

This baby (just like dd) is measuring at 95th percentile for head circumference, so pushing may be an issue!

Being on all fours is supposed to open up your pelvis to its maximum, but that would freak me out too!

  • Both my boys had large heads and this one probably will too, and I've got small hips.  With my first, they asked if a vacuum had been used because his head was so bruised and cone shaped.  And he was 5 weeks early!  I hope all goes great for you, and maybe baby will turn!

  • Most posterior babies will turn on their own during labor, but it can make labor longer. Hands and knees/cat cow can help. Also avoid reclining on the couch, that position encourages posterior position. You probably already read all that on spinning babies :)
