Gestational diabetes and checking ketones

I was diagnosed last week and have only had 1 week to alternate my diet to make it fit within the numbers.  My fasting levels are supposed to be 60-90.  I've gotten 4 over 90 this week (91, 94, 95, 101).  My sugar levels 1 hour after each meal are supposed to be below 120 and I've hit all of those perfect.  I'm supposed to pee on a stick to check my ketones every morning as well.

So....today the nurse practictioner said she wasn't as concerned with the 4 high fasting numbers as she is concerned with my ketones.  I've had "small" amounts every morning and she wants those negative or trace.  She told me I should eat more carbs throughout the day and that will help with the ketones and might bring my fasting levels down as well.  Anyone have experience with the same problem?  High fasting numbers and/or amounts of ketones?  What'd you do about it?  I'm trying to modify my diet and exercise so I won't be put on insulin at night.  Of course, if that doesn't work, I'll take the insulin cuz I want my baby safe and healthy.  Thanks!

  • I didn't have problems with ketones but have dealt with GD twice. How are you modifying your diet? You don't want to eliminate carbs completely, you just need to limit and balance them throughout the day.

I agree w the above poster. Keep a food journal to help you track. Probably the nurse is concerned because keystones in the morning when you haven't eaten for awhile just means It hasn't balanced yet. Give it e and try to establish patterns to reduce keystones. Hope that helps
  • Thanks guys! I do keep a food log and at first was only allowing myself 15 grams of carbs at a time (eat 6 small meals a day) which is only 90 grams per day. I was scared about going over my number range. I experimented and depending on exercise, I could go up to 140 grams a day. So I'm trying to stay at 140 or more and see how it goes.
  • Ketones are emphasized by some hcp and not others (mine has never had me check them or said a word about them). Their importance is kind of up for debate. They can also come from not eating enough overall or going to long without eating, so be sure you're having a good bedtime snack and try not to go more than 8-10 hours fasting over night.
