Parenting after a Loss

Cool mist humidifier question.

Where do you have yours set up? I have an adorable train cool mist humidifier that I just took out of the box. It says avoid carpets and wood surfaces, and that pretty much sums up my house. His nursery is carpet, and his crib is currently in the master far from the tile en suite bath. It says not to put on a towel...am I over thinking this? Thanks ;;)

Re: Cool mist humidifier question.

  • We bought a waterproof dog bowl placemat to put under our humidifier.  It's meant for dog bowl water spills, so I figured it'd be good enough for this.  I also run our ceiling fan on the lowest setting with the humidifier to make sure it doesn't just soak the area in front of it.  I figured it helps circulate the humid air a bit so it doesn't settle in one spot.  Having said all of this, I wonder if I'm over thinking it too. :D

I just put it on the fireplace tile raised on our kitty food mat as you suggested ( did not throw that away, also saved her bed :( ) and I can see how it is quite wet so clearly would damage our wood and carpet. Hmmm, the fan is a good idea. I think my wee man might be getting his first cold.

I never really read the directions for our humidifier! I have it sitting on a towel on a bookcase in Z's room. If we turn it up all the way I notice the towel is damp but otherwise it's fine. Maybe I should be more concerned about this. :)

Hmmm, what did my Mum do back in the day? I am sure it did not take this much thought. Maybe I should ask her, lol! :-/

Back in the day my mom always put the "vaporizer" on a TV tray and put it in the bedroom of whomever in the family was sick. I don't know why we called it a vaporizer I think it was just a humidifier. All I remember is that it was loud! And the TV tray was one of the "cool" ones from the 70's. I have no idea what cheap material they were made out of but they had a wilderness scene on them. Edit because words are hard when I'm sleep deprived!

Ah, yes. I'm a 73 baby myself. I also recall the cool Vicks vapor rub. Do Mommys still do that? I have so much to learn.... #:-S

We had something similar to @twotexans in the beginning but were forced to move it once she was able to crawl/pull up.  She was really interested in it and I didn't want her to pull it down on herself.
I agree.  For now it works.  Once she gets older it will likely be relegated to top of the dresser.  My sister has my nephew's on the top of a plastic tub that she uses for storage. She pushes it back into his closet each morning.

Yes, my guy can barely hold his head up so I have some time to child proof the idea. I appreciate the comments!

Check to see where the fan is located on your humidifier.  If it is located on the bottom, the fan may clog and burn up from lint and lack of air circulation when it is sitting directly on a towel.
