Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How much formula?

We recently switched our son over to enfamil AR due to constant reflux, it has worked wonders with him and it seems now that he's not throwing up and gettingthe pain from the reflux he wants to eat more. We are currently giving him 5oz every 2 1/2 to 3 hours but he seem to be getting hungry faster now. Our Dr told us that we need to cut back on the amount of formula we are giving him however we don't feel like it is to much for him as I said he's seems to be getting hungrier more often on 5oz I couldn't even imagine lowering it. We have started feeding him rice cereal however he doesn't eat much of it at all and is still learning how to eat it. So I was wondering how much is to much or should I just listen to my son and keep feeding till full? He is currently 5 months old and I know hes just going to GEF hungrier the older he gets. Any suggestions? suggestions?

  • My lo seemed to have a huge appetite too, but what we've realized since is that he would drink to sooth the reflux, then get overfull which causes more reflux, want to drink more to sooth, get even fuller...you get the picture. Have you tried small, frequent bottles? Is he being treated for the reflux? Have you tried rice in the bottle instead of by spoon?

  • My peanut is now at 6oz every 3 hours and also on Enfamil AR.  And he's not a big baby at all.  I'm not sure what the answer is.  But I'm wondering the same thing :)  So you're not alone :)

From what I've read, anywhere between 20-40oz per day and up to 8oz per feed of milk is considered normal.  I understand it's not good to add cereal to your baby's bottle as it could fill him up quickly and he may not take in enough fluid, putting him at risk from dehydration.

My DS is 5.5 months and is up to 40 oz most days. If he wanted more I would give it to him. It's not like there is any hedonistic eating going on with FF. If he is hungry, I feed him. Once he is full, he pushes the bottle away or starts spitting out the milk.
  • He was treated for reflux, he was put on medication and nutramagin formula however he was still getting sick so we brought him to a specialist and he's the one that switched him to the AR formula. Since we switched the reflux is pretty much gone, we were even able to get him off the medication. However he is just always sooooo hungry. He eats 6oz every 21/2 to 3 hours and the 3 hours is pushing it. We started giving him rice cereal once a day but he's not that good at eating it yet and doesn't consume a lot. My Dr told me to cut him back the last time we were there and that was wen he was eating 5oz. I just don't understand how she expects me to cut him back wen he's obviously hungry. She said to try and give him his pacifier instead of a bottle but he always screams wen I try that BC he's hungry.

Are you sure the reflux isn't still bothering him? Why do you feel it's gone? I'm assuming he doesn't spit up as much on the AR? He could be eating to ease the burning. My reflux baby projectile vomits every now and then, other than that he does not spit up. Even before he was on Zantac and Neocate, he was never a spitter. But he ate constantly to ease his discomfort.
  • The reason I think the reflux is gone is BC he doesn't spit up like he use to where he use to throw up more so then spit up and also he does not cry like he use to when he had the reflux. He used to cry a lot wen the reflux would bother him and it was like a pain cry and he hasn't don't that since switching to at
