4month old not eating help!!

I exclusively pump. My LO will be 4 months on the 20th. He all of a sudden has decided he doesn't want to eat. I exclusively pump and he was taking in about 24/25oz a day. 4oz every 2.5-3hrs. He has decided he only wants 2oz now and I'm stressed out. Yesterday he only had 18oz and today if he takes 3oz before bed will have 17.5oz he downs 2oz, he pushes the bottle out with his tongue, I burp him try again and he cries, I change him and try again and he cries. I don't know what is going on. Help did your LO go through this?

Re: 4month old not eating help!!

  • No other symptoms, not fussy. Smiling and happy. I called Pediatrition and the nurse said it didn't sound like an ear infection. We have had a lot of trouble with feeding and gaining weight but this is the worse it's been. Was told it could be a tongue and lip tie, he had his lip lasered yesterday and doc said she didn't think he had a tongue tie. I'm at a loss. Exhausted and frustrated!

  • My LO is going through this right now. After some research it seems like it's normal and could  be related to teething. My doc explained to me once that adults go through phases of eating alot and then not so much and babies do the same thing. If you LO is having the correct amount of wet diapers and is happy otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just keep an eye out on him and if any new symptoms pop up, call your doc.
  • The lip tie was done yesterday and this has been going on for a week that it's been this bad but it's always been a struggle to get him to drink enough. Today I didn't force him, usually I try to force an extra ounce here and there so he won't dehydrate but today I didn't and we are at 14.5oz and he will get one more bottle before bed. He used to sleep through the night from 7:30-6 and now he is waking up to be fed.
  • So is it 14.5 ounces in a 24 hr period or is it 14.5 ounces from the time he wakes in the am until bed time. Maybe he is getting the same amount of ounces from day time and is added those night feeds to make up for the smaller bottles?

  • Almost the day LO turned 5mo she stopped eating well. Funny, her over all daily intake was up (from 17-19oz to 24-27 oz per day), but she would hit the bottle and refuse to feed. Most of her feedings were done at evenings and night when she would cluster sleep eat.

By accident our nanny discovered that she likes to eat outside sitting in her stroller-in the car seat. So I tried it last weekend.  She woke up at 7:30 and she didnt want to eat until almost 10. She would swat and hit the bottle and cry at the sight of the bottle. I put her in the stroller, circle our driveway once which took like 10 seconds and put the bottle in her mouth, then off she goes. She guzzled down 5 oz. She did this basically all weekend. I think she is teething (she's been drooling and chewing everything). Kellymom says when teething, the negative pressure created by sucking hurts. So, may be being outside distracts her from the pain?  Idk and I don't think any other babies would do this but it was so strange.
