Whole30?

Has anyone done the Whole 30? I would love to hear about your experience and any tips you have. I ordered the book and plan to start it around the first of May (as long as our escrow closes on time). I definitely need a reset because to be honest when it comes to chocolate/sugar I am like an addict. I NEED my next fix, it is sad. TIA If anyone wants to do it with me, I would love some company.

  • I don't know what that is..but sugar is seriously addictive. I'm here to support you on not eating any!

  • I've never heard of this.  Must google.

  • That sounds intense but I think I'm going to try it with DH. Are you Breastfeeding @hendy02? I just don't want to mess up my supply.

  • @nbcarlson that is one of my concerns as well. A friend did it and didn't have issues with her supply, that is why I am even considering it. However I know everyone is different but my fingers are crossed.

@hendy02‌, the weight will be great to see go but I am happy to hear the other side effects as well. I am always achey and exhausted, it sucks.

  • Be warned, the first week can be awful. Hang in there, it will get better. You may feel sluggish, irritable, even achy. It is very common, you aren't broken! ;)
I haven't done it while nursing though and I'm too scared to risk it.
  • @jenball717, thanks for the warning. @nryan55, great tip! Thank you.

  • I just don't think I could ever live a carb and dairy free life.  No beans, potato, milk for 30 days?  then potentially forever? eek  I get the sads thinking about it.

I was thinking about doing that stupid 21 day reset from shakeology.  Its portion control which I think I can get behind, its only that shake that Im unsure of.

  • I think I could go without dairy, potatoes, and beans for 30 days. Not for life though. Oh and I love bread.

  • I am definitely considering this a reset for now. I used to eat really healthy. I followed the 90/10 rule and that is what I am trying to get back to. Right now it is definitely 50/50 and that just isn't good enough. @beernifer, do it! Start right after beer week.

  • @has615, I have had a couple friends do really well with the shakeology 21 day thing.  However a couple of them followed up with weight watchers to continue the loss and then ones that didn't do anything afterwards gained it back.

Yes I am. I was worried about it unitially too but it hasnt been a problem. I do take fenugreek though, but I did that before I started the whole 30 too.

I can go without beans and other carbs (we do primal now so we have dairy, also most paleo/primal adopters have potatoes), I just can't do portion control!

You can have sweet potatoes on the whole 30. Thats what we ate 90% of the time before anyway so it hasn't been a big thing for us.

Yes, that has been great. I used to literally fall asleep in the afternoon (true, DS was up a lot at night but still) and Now all of the sudden it is dinner time and, poof, that fatigue just never hits. Even though DS is still up 1-3 times a night.

This reminds me of a deal I did a couple of years ago that was based on your blood type. My particular blood type was to avoid cheeses, grains, etc. It did work great for me.

So can you do this without buying the book or is the book mandatory in order to get it right?

I liked it. Lost weight quick which is so not like me. I am an O - they are classified essentially carnivores bc it is the oldest blood type. So I basically ate tons of fruits, veggies and protein. Simple ingredients and nothing processed. Different blood types do better with different type food based on their origin. And different blood types do better with different exercising. O bloods need vigorous excercising - I guess used to hunting their food (ha!). It explains this all by pointing out some diets work for some and others not....this is the reason why.

  • I've been curious about Paleo and this Whole30 sounds very intriguing.   But I am so intimidated by the whole thing.  Fast and easy is my motto when it comes to cooking.  When I think about whole foods, I just have no idea what I'd do for breakfast OR lunch.  I'm sure that is all covered in the books, though - right?  For those that have done it, how much time do you dedicate per week to planning and preparing your meals?

When I get home I will look and see what my book says B is. The positive or negative does not impact it one way or another.

Yes we do! I can relate! My hubs broke his foot helping someone haul cattle a few weeks ago. Bummer! I have had to help him wash his crutches and boot thing free of manure daily. Ha!

I do have Fb. I'll send you a message when I get home (again). ;)

I'm not planning on Whole30, but I am very regimented about planning and prepping meals. It helped both me and DH lose about 30 lbs each. Plus we don't spend tons of money eating out.

Step One: Planning (The Most Important Step)
I normally spend an hour or two on Thursday or Friday night planning my meals. I use Evernote and create a different note for each week, that way I can track what I made recently or what we really liked/didn't like. I have a pretty robust Pinterest board of recipes and also have some websites and cookbooks I look at for ideas. I check out the circular at my two grocery stores and decide which one I'll go to based on what sales are happening on meat and dairy and produce. I always do a crockpot meal on Sunday, because that is one of the days I prep for the week and don't feel like making yet another meal that day. We eat the same thing for breakfast most weeks - I eat two hardboiled eggs and yogurt, I make DH breakfast sandwiches that I freeze and take out for him the night before with eggs, ham, cheese on an English muffin. Lunches are variable and dinners are normally cooked on Sunday (crockpot), Wednesday (real quick dinner with easy cleanup) and Friday (nicer dinner with wine and relaxing) with leftovers in between.

    Step Two: Shop
I go to the grocery store on Saturday morning.I make sure to shop the perimeter of the store for the healthiest items. Produce, meat, dairy. No packaged stuff in the middle. Normal spend for a week is approximately $100-$120.

    Step Three: Prep
I take about an hour on Saturday and another hour on Sunday to prep all of our meals for the week, breakfast, lunch and dinner. When I get home, dinner is quick and breakfast for the next day is just put in a lunch bag.

I know this won't work for everyone, but it has become a routine for me. I like to plan and prep and cook, so it is also enjoyable. Saves so much time during the week and we don't eat crap.

Thank you so much for writing this out!

If others want to make this a group thing - I'm in.  I need to make a big change, and am ready.  I will say though, if it starts to affect the milk supply, i'll have to put it off until later.  I'm hoping that it doesn't!

  • I want to but my milk supply is crazy temperamental. Every time I don't eat enough my supply is low, and then I get absolutely ravenous, eat 6 huge meals, and feel engorged the next day.

but i'll do a modified version with you- i'll just quit sugar-sugar.

I absolutely want to do this, so I'll deft join the group. I also want to mention that there are BF forums on whole30.com that discuss milk supply and how the diet can actually increase your supply, especially if you eat enough fats such as nuts and avocados. Whole30.com has the whole program, shopping lists, meal prep, etc online for free so you don't have to buy any books. Plus Paleo recipes are all over the place too.

  • I just did a "party" on Sunday where we made freezer meals (10 of them) that were focused around being paleo. I split the recipes in half, so DH and I now have 20 paleo meals in the freezer. Everything was pretty much meat, fresh veggies and seasoning. So yummy, and it took 2 hours to put the 20 meals together.

If anyone is interested in more details, let me know. Happy to share!
