New born struggling to poop

My baby is 2 weeks old tomorrow we switch his formula last week per the pedi.. he wasn't gained enough weight they switched him to gentalease for gas, fussy and crying formula. And since then he has taken on all those symptoms! He grunts and gets really red faced and farts a little but can't produce a bowel movement. I feel so bad I don't know what to do.. We're going on 12 hours now with no poop. He never ever cries or fusses and the past few days have been awful :-(.. Anyone else going though this??

  • Have you tried massaging his stomach? You'll have to look up which direction since one way is for diarrhea and the other for constipation. But I know some moms have had success with this technique. Also things like bicycling the legs can help.

I've also heard about putting a q-tip up baby's bottom (just a little bit) with some vaseline and rotating it around. Be careful though, ive heard this can work immediately. :)

  • We had the exact same problem with my ten day old last week but we switched to the Gentlease to relieve it. After a few days, he has regulated.
Anyway, the pediatrician suggested using a rectal thermometer to stimulate the anal area (for lack of a better term!). I did it twice during a diaper change and he went about an hour later. They said to repeat until we saw results.
Good luck to you and LO, I know it's miserable to watch!
  • No experience with formula causing this, but DD1 was breastfed and had similar issues.  We put a little prune juice mixed with breastmilk in a bottle and that helped us a lot.

  • My son had constipation issues as a newborn, although he was breastfed. What worked well was to put a warm wash cloth over his belly and then do the thermometer up his bottom. Massaging also sometimes worked but the heat always seemed to do the trick.

  • We had that with my son and I'm sure it'll happen this Time with dd as well. The pedi told us it is normal for them to go through a period of this as they learn which muscles do what as they poop and fart. He went a few days without pooping. But once he figured it all out, no issues. Now dd seems to be doing the same thing and is always farting. We thing she's a little gassy so we might switch to a formula for gassiness until I can pump enough milk to not need formula. Mention it to the pedi though. Could be constipation. But can also just be normal. It's so hard to know when they're so little and we are just getting to know them.

  • PF had this problem and she has been on pear juice twice a day. Check with your ped. She has also gotten a few suppositories when she was younger.

Did you just buy over the counter regular pear juice?

  • It sounds well within the range of normal to me. Like pp mentioned - they don't know how to coordinate the muscles needed to poo for awhile.
