9 months appt... question!

I have seen that many of you have had your 9mo appt and that the recommendation was to reduce or stop MOTN feedings. I had the same.

The thing is, LO is over the growth graph both in weight and height but still the nurse told me that BF was keeping him 'fat' and for him to go into the average weight I need to reduce feedings to 3 per day!!! WTF?!? I feed with on demand which is around 6-7 times per day. He does eat solids quite well.

Also, this is not a dr. and I don't have a pedi because you don't get to see one unless LO is really sick. So... WWYD? I tried reducing to 5 feedings yesterday, he didn't seem to care and I substituted one feeding with water which he (surprisingly) drank but I don't want him to have a problem with liquids intake!

I am so confused, she also said that MOTN feedings should be completely gone because otherwise it will become a bad habit to eat during night. I tried to put him back to sleep without feeding last night and he looked at me, smiled and pull himself up in his crib... I couldn't left him there because I knew he would melt down the moment I stepped away without giving his precious milk!

Sorry it became more like a vent, I just don't know what to do. Also, she said I have to sleep-train him for DC (he will start in 3 months from now) and he does not go to sleep without help. Does you LO goes to sleep by him/herself? Does s/he sleep well at DC?

  • I wouldn't worry about it, and I'd keep doing what you're doing.  Do what works for you and your family.

  • I agree with all PP. We just went to ours and L was in the 30th %tile in height, weight and head circumference. I told the dr that she was still having 1-2 motn feedings. She looked at me (clearly wanted to tell me to stop) but said "ok that's not too bad". As of the past few nights, L has cut out those feedings herself. It's all about following what baby needs. If you're ok with it, you're healthy, LO is healthy. That's all that matters IMO.
  • This reminds me a little of the solids schedule that is discussed in bringing up bebe. Different ways of doing it, I guess. Personally I would use any advice that is helpful and ignore the rest. My daughter still nurses on demand when we're together and I plan to continue that until she is a year.

  • You know your baby better than anyone else in the world. I would trust your instinct in this.

  • Thanks ladies, I just wanted some reassurance.. I am not worried about his weight, because as I said he is also taller than average. I guess she said 'fat' because of the language barrier (I don't speak Dutch and we do what we can to communicate).

The only thing that worries me is sleeping at DC, but I guess if I find a good one they will have tricks other than putting him in a crib and walking away. Also because LO's melt down would probably wake up all the other babies in the sleeping room lol

I agree it must be cultural because I never heard of any of you ladies giving only 3 bottles/feedings per day. It just seems too little.

  • I'm sorry. Remember that doctors are experts on health related issues- illnesses, etc- but on parenting issues they aren't experts. You do not have to sleep train for DC. And if your baby is hungry, feed him! no matter what time of day or night.

  • I agree with everyone else.  Why change something that is working?  Your doing a great job, keep it up!  Just nod and smile! :)

  • That nurse is 8-} Just keep doing what you're doing. That nurse is full of bologna. As I hear it, intake of milk is supposed to stay fairly high until around a year... They need more and more calories so they eat more solids and maintain milk consumption. They drop milk for solids when ready. We're just now starting to sometimes offer solids before milk... Like if she woke to eat at 5:30, instead of nursing her at 7 before breakfast I just give her breakfast immediately. I have to nurse after either way. This way if she's ready to eat more she has the opportunity... And if not then fine whatevs I'm following her lead.
    Yup, all of this.

  • I would agree to continue to feed on demand. That is what I am doing as well. I didn't sleep train dd1 until she was closer to 11months, she was down to one or two wake ups, and I knew it was more habit than hunger. @mainerocks‌ how are you reducing the feedings? That is my next step as well (we are up every hour and a half to two hours all night)
