BTDT -- Car Seats

So, Josephine is an escape artist.  Her straps are tight enough, but she will push the breast plate down to her lap put her hands through and get her arms out of the straps.  I've tried talking to her about this... She's 2 for goodness sake, she's not into reasoning, I've tried positive reinforcement when she doesn't escape, and punishment when she does.  I'm at a loss... typically happens when she's tired after a bit she'll generally fall asleep, but I need to convince her it's bad to do that.

Help.

  • DS used to do this. We just kept threatening/reinforcing that he HAD to keep the chest clip up. It got to where I could just look at him and say 'armpits!' and he'd pull it back up into place. I considered putting strap covers under the chest clip to prevent him from being able to push it down but we didn't get to that point.

  • @meenaJo what did you threaten/reinforce?  Like what was the potential punishment?

Threaten as in, we can't drive anywhere if you don't keep the clip up at your armpits. So no playground/ice cream runs/trips to the store etc. He didn't want to stay home (I even pulled over once).

  • ok thanks we'll try that!  She just gets to screaming and she's really hard to reason with when she's fit throwing.  Today she threw her shoes at DH, and escaped 2x he had to pull over twice and she was just a hysterical mess.

  • I kept seeing car seats with these plastic pieces under the clip that kept it in place but I could never find them sold separately. That's when I read about using strap covers but we didn't get to that point. Good luck!

  • Yikes, no advice--DS1 hasn't tried this, fortunately.  I keep it pretty damn tight though, like err on the side of being a tad too tight over not tight enough.  I could see it becoming an issue in the next year though...threenager, here we come...

  • OMG that sounds maddening! I haven't experienced this, but I wonder if there is a way to safety pin the chest piece in place? I hope this is a short lived phase for you!

  • Oh gosh, K used to do this too! Freaked me out! We had several talks about keeping the buckle on his heart. What finally worked is us repeating "Mommy's/Daddy's job is to keep you safe because we love you, K's job is to let mommy and daddy do our job. Keeping the buckle on your heart lets us all do our jobs." We also talked about without it on his heart that it could make him not be with us anymore and that we couldn't go places because I couldn't let him get hurt. I also tightened them extra tight to make it harder to move. We still repeated the words in quotes every time we load up. Sounds crazy, but it works. Good luck!
