1st Trimester

Gagging

Ladies,
I need some advice. I'm almost 7 weeks pregnant and I keep gagging. I haven't had any morning sickness, but I just keep gagging. It is especially bad when I cough. Does anyone have any remedies or advice?

Re: Gagging

  • No remedies or advice, but I sympathize as it happens to me all the time- I'm 10 weeks. I'll just be going about my normal everyday business and gag for absolutely no reason. It was especially bad when I had a cold/cough last week. Be thankful you're not nauseous all the time too :)

  • I have this problem too.  If I yawn too big, I gag.  No nausea, but the gagging sucks.  I can brush my teeth just fine, but brushing my tongue is completely gag inducing.  Hoping that it will all pass once I move into my 2nd Trimester.

  • I'm the same way, I can brush my teeth with no problem. Just gag for no reason all the time. I've been sucking on hard candy today and that seems to help me some. I really hope it goes away too. Such a yucky feeling!

  • The gagging thing is a real drag. If I cough or burp, look out. I almost always gag and it's usually followed by a flat out run to the bathroom to empty the contents of my stomach. Sneezing has even become an issue. I had this problem my last pregnancy too, and it didn't fully go away afterwards either. Lemon heads work really well for keeping my stomach from turning to much though.

  • Thanks for posting this!  I haven't had any pregnancy symptoms this week other than gagging every time I brush my teeth or take my temperature.  I never thought of it as a sign of morning sickness.
  • Glad to hear more having this issue... this kicked in for me over the past week.  I've been taking Zofran since weeks 6 and luckily that has helped keep things down, but the gag reflex is new.  The other night I gagged to the point of sitting in front of the toilet (just in case) after trying to cut lasagna and hearing the sloppy sound.. ugh.  Brushing my teeth is a nightmare, I finish as quick as I can :(  PRAYING all of this eases up at the 12 week mark.

@excitedpreggo12 - interesting to hear that your dr said this is the peak of m/s at 10 weeks. I've been having a tough couple of days and the Zofran doesn't seem to be working as well throughout the day. I was planning on bringing this up tomorrow at my appointment.

  • I just started gagging the other day.  I'll be 12 weeks tomorrow & thought I was gonna breeze through my 1st trimester without morning sickness.  Thankfully it doesn't happen very often but when it does it's at the most random times.  When it happened earlier this morning I was washing my hands.  I wonder if it is the deodorizer in the bathroom??  It hasn't bothered me in the past.  Oh the joys:)  Happy gagging ladies!

  • Me too. All day every day. I typically only actually barf when brushing my teeth. :/

This. But I vomit even when not brushing my teeth as well.
  • Omg I have the same problem! I'll just be walking around the house and the sight or smell of something will just make me start gagging like mad...or even if I just cough I gag.
  • With my previous pregnancy it was mostly gagging and/or dry heaving, thus far, at 6 weeks 1 day, this pregnancy has been similar. No remedies.. just keep yourself hydrated, sorry, I know how much this sucks

  • I had this through the first trimester of my first pregnancy.  Those pregnancy pops helped, and when I couldn't get them or didn't want to spend the extra money on them any sugarless hard candy worked.  Only reason I used sugarless was because I needed so many, I hated the feeling of a sugar coating on my teeth.  I also had to walk really slowly, like snail slow, and drank buckets of water.  Hope you feel better soon!
  • gagging was my first clue that I was pregnant this time.  I started gagging on Wednesday and have been gagging ever since.

I live on Jolly ranchers when I was pregnant with my son.   They were so much better then pregnancy pops and cheeper too.

They helped a ton with gagging.   I have already them on my grocery list for this week.
