Stupid question about starting baby food.

Maci will be 6 mos Friday. So this weekend I was gonna try to give her some purées. But my son is 4 and I don't remember how to do this! So once she gets the hang of it do you give the baby food in the morning with breakfast and then with dinner and give bottles in between or what? And do you give a bottle with the food? I'm lost and I have totally forgotten how to start this. Help! Thanks!

I'm a FTM so it's possible I am doing it wrong, but I am just keeping with her normal bottle/boob feeding routine.  Then at dinnertime, I give her some baby food of some sort... we are doing some purees and pulling some ideas from the BLW playbook. Mostly food is just about experimenting and tasting and practicing right now, so she isn't actually ingesting that much.

I don't believe it is supposed to replace any of their bottles/boob meals at this point.
This is what I thought too, but when dd had her 6 month appointment on Friday, the ped. said she should decrease her formula intake slowly, so I have no idea.  I feel like I'm failing at feeding my kid.

  • So far LO has been eating food twice a day. We do morning and late afternoon (between 3-5) and then after he eats when he wants a bottle we give him that. As of right now (been doing it a month) he still eats a full bottle after he eats. He also has now started to eat a full 2-3oz and still consumes a 6 oz bottle.

We are hoping it changes soon!
  • My ped said give food three times a day like we eat...breakfast, lunch and dinner. I followed his direction and it has worked out great for us! I give the boob first and then the solid. There is a feeding in early afternoon where he only gets the boob...and that also happens at bedtime and for his MOTN feeding as well. It was completely overwhelming at first but now its just second nature. Good luck!

  • Yeah formula/BM should be their main source of calories for some time before food starts replacing that. Our ped said to feed him in the morning, wait about a hour and offer food. Then feed him in the late afternoon/evening wait a hour and offer food. We were told to always offer it after to ensure LO is getting all the necessary nutrition from formula/bm. Half the time ds just smears it everywhere on his high chair or doesn't want all of the ounce of food I'm attempting to feed (we do purées) and I don't worry about it. He's getting everything he needs from the formula and it's more fun for me to figure out what tastes he likes at this point ;) Edit; because I couldn't stand the improper use of "there" lol
This makes me feel better.  DD is funny lately.  She doesn't really care for her purees but she'll grab anything in it's whole form and eat it that way.  I'm just so scared she'll choke.  It's weird though, daycare says she eats the entire puree.  I'm starting to wonder...

  • @deedee1017‌ ds does this every now and then when he's "iffy" on what I'm feeding him which is usually anything but yams and carrots lol. We've tried sweet potato wedges and he loved them but it did make me a little nervous and I haven't tried any other veggie in slices yet.
The other day, I had opened three different packages of purees and she wasn't having any of it.  On top of that, she then flails her arms and it goes EVERYWHERE.  Ugh!

  • We're doing the same bottle/boob routine as before, rice cereal in between at DC, and either a fruit or veggie around dinner time.

  • I haven't read the other responses, so this may be a repeat. I feed DS food for 'breakfast' and 'dinner'. I nurse him when he wakes up and then give oatmeal and a fruit about 1 - 1.5 hours later. He gets his regular bottle/boob schedule throughout the day and I nurse him again when I get home around 6. He sits at the table to eat dinner with DH and I around 7. At that time he gets either 2 veggies or a veggie and a fruit. I then nurse him again before he goes to bed. I really couldn't tell you how much he ingests of the food but a large portion of it ends up on his face and the tray; he has a good time with it!

My pedi had told me on Monday that at this point, the food is all about experimentation and learning and that he still needs all the nutrients from BM or formula. She is very pro-BLW and told me to follow baby's cues as far as how much to feed and what he likes. We do a mix of purees and BLW and I'm really just following DS at this point. He loves sitting in his highchair and 'eating' with us!

  • Thanks a lot! I just BF now and haven't given her any rice or cereal. I thought I was supposed to continue to feed her like normal but I just couldn't remember. I remember with my son that he just made a huge mess and I don't think any if it actually got in his mouth but it was fun to watch. I'm kinda anxious to see how she does with it. Thanks again!
  • My kid loves food. Like, none of this "food is for fun" stuff - he SCREAMS between bites and I can not get it in his mouth fast enough. And we haven't decreased his milk intake at all - he gets his normal bottle/boob routine, on top of "breakfast" and "dinner", which consist of 1oz of cereal and 1/2 jar of some fruit or veggie.
We also do some BLW - that's more unstructured, and is usually based off what we're eating at the time, and what he shows interest in.

  • I am doing what pp have already described. I found most places say start with a tablespoon of solids once a day and increase from there but keep formula/breastmilk the same until baby drops the volume themselves

aah stuck in your quote tree : I could have written this exactly. I am feeding him about an ounce three times a day but haven't changed his BF schedule at all. We have an eater over here.
