snacks during labor (also posted in 3rd tri)

Im trying to figure out what to get and have on hand for labor.  If you had small snacks during labor, what did you get?  My doula said to get chewy things.  Right now, I am planning on taking gatorade or something with electrolytes, granola bars/cliff bars, and maybe a bag of trail mix.  I would love to hear suggestions though.  :-)  TIA!!

  • I packed pretty similar things in my bag- granola bars, some nuts, a fruit cup or two.  I'm thinking things that I would eat during a long run?  I doubt I'll be very hungry, but it's definitely good to keep

I packed similar stuff:  goldfish, peanut butter crackers, a yougurt, gatorade, coke (in case I needed caffeine or a sugar rush), trail mix, water, cliff bars, a banana, and dum dum lollipops.  I read somewhere that the dum dums are great for sucking on because they can hit a pressure point for pain relief.  I have no idea if that is true.

In any case, I didn't end up eating any of it because I did not want any food during labor.  However, I'm happy I had packed it because after birth, when I was in the hospital, I was super hungry and the hospital food was atrocious.

    Good luck!

  • Similar stuff, granola bars, etc. high energy food. I also didnt want any during labor but ate it PP.
  • Thanks everyone! @mb314 Im gonna look into the dum dum thing. :-)
  • I wasn't really hungry, but I ate some of a Popsicle and saltines.
  • I also didn't eat much but really enjoyed protein drinks. My MWs recommended them, I only purchased 1 for the last round, enjoyed it so much I bought 5 for this labor! :) I def wanted at least one more during my last labor so we shall see.
  • I had kashi fruit bars, honey sticks, granola bars and popsicles. In labor I actually ate a ton. I had a turkey sub in early labor and then the honey sticks and kashi bars throughout. For me I wanted soft, easy to eat things so the granola bars were out.
  • honey sticks were an absolute lifesaver.

  • I didn't bring snacks because the birth center had tons of options. But I ended up eating chicken noodle soup and bread from Panera about 18 hours into labor and it was the best meal I've had in my life.

  • I asked the same question before my birth. I used a lot of the suggestions from PPs, but I'd add applesauce. I didn't want to crunch or chew, but I wanted something cool and sweet. I didn't eat anything else I brought. It's good to have a variety, though — you may not know what you'll feel like.

  • Thanks for the suggestions! With my daughter, I wasnt allowed food nor water for days. It was torture. I refuse to let that happen to me this time. Thanks again everyone!!
  • I'm a FTM so I don't have experience with anything but I've heard that a lot of times, women can't stomach the thought of eating real food but still need an energy boost. My bradley method instructor recommended honey sticks. I feel like energy gels that long distance runners use (there is a brand called Gu) would probably work really well!

Just try to choose something that will be easy coming back up, softer stuff. Puking is a realistic possibility and you don't want to be vomiting almonds.
