Nursing tank sizes?

Ok this maybe a stupid question, but I'm a FTM and not sure.

How do you know what size to get? In regular clothes before becoming pregnant I would be L or XL depending on the style. My bra size is 38DDD. I bought two tanks from Target, both XL, when I came home and looked at them the one looks big and the other looks smaller. Would trying them on now be about accurate for at least fitting in the boobs?
I've yet to look at nursing bras so any input on those would be really appreciated.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I really don't know.

Re: Nursing tank sizes?

  • I am a similar bra size and went with an XL. I wouldn't go nuts buying nursing tanks and bras. Yeah, you will need something, but for the bulk of it wait until your milk comes in. Know also that as your output regulates you may need to downsize a little.

Grab some boob pads while you are at it. Not uncommon for them to leak a bit, especially in the first few months. I mostly needed them at night with DS.

  • I find the ones from Target (G&O) brand run a little big compared to other regular tanks I own.  I only have those nursing tanks so I cannot compare to other brands.  I would buy one or two that look a little big for the first couple weeks before your tummy and boobies settle and then figure out what size you'll be later.

  • I bought a box of boob pads, boob cream, and the two tanks. I figured I could hold off in the bras until after she makes her big arrival.

  • I didn't wear a bra at first.  Just nursing tanks with the shelf bra.  I didn't care in the hospital and my boobs were so engorged when my milk came in (the day we got home) they went from their normal southbound state to standing up right all on their own.  I wasn't joking when I said I took a picture for my future plastic surgeon.

  • I bought a couple of nursing tanks at Target to take to the hospital with me. I am waiting to buy more tanks and actual nursing bras until my milk comes in, so I know what size my boobs will be. I tried on both a small and medium, I'm normally a small while not pregnant, but I've gone up to a medium with my pregnant boobs. The medium was a bit loose in the boobs, but still supportive (they have a shelf bra) so I figured they would be good for at least the hospital and my boobs can grow into them a bit.

They are skinny strapped tanks, not really my style to wear on their own in public, so even if my boobs get huge, I would only be using them for around the house without something over them.
