Face down sleeping worries

edited April 2014 in September 2013 Moms
As I've posted many times before, my DD is a horrible sleeper. We tried one night of sleep training and she fell asleep within 40 minutes (modified CIO). As she was quieting down, I went to peep in to check on her. She was on her tummy falling asleep (which I'm okay with) but she was practically face down. It scared the crap out of me.

I tried to move her head but she'd just wake up and get mad and let out a loud cry like "woman, you put me here, let me sleep!"

I was finally able to move her head when she was completely passed out to expose her nostrils. However, she just keeps going back to that same position. She's not completely head down but her nostrils are definitely in the mattress.

Am I being way to paranoid?

Note - this has also made me realize that I should get a video monitor for our sleep training so I don't keep bothering her by checking on her every 10 minutes.

Re: Face down sleeping worries

  • My LO sleeps on her tummy 90% of the time, I always lay her on her back when I put her down though. I worried too at first but now I don't anymore. It looks like on the monitor screen that she's face down but when I have gone in her head is titled slightly to the side. Yes a video monitor is so nice to have especially if you are doing sleep training!

  • Mine sleeps like that too. It's funny because my DH woke me up in a panic telling that our baby is sleeping on her face and he was so upset. But she likes it the best and she sleeps all night if I let her do it so I'm not gonna mess with her
  • Mine sleeps like that as well. She falls asleep face down, with her hands tucked under her cheeks. I used to do the same and try to move her head to one side, but she would wake up (I always put her to sleep on her back and she rolls over immediately).

But after a few hours of sleeping like that, she tends to move her head to one side. My pedi said that is why firm mattresses are important, but not to worry at this age.

  • Same here!  DD was not sleeping thru the night until two nights ago when my husband put her down on her tummy.  She slept right on her face and was out for 10 hours!  I woke up several times to check on her because I was so freaked but it seems to be working.  Last night same thing....9 hours.  But she does roll and push herself into a push up position so I am more comfortable with her sleeping like that.

  • Desmond sleeps on his tummy a lot, but not face down. It still worries me, but I know he is safe. He is a super good roller. Video monitors are amazing. I'm so happy I went ahead and spent the money on one.
Here is him right now on his belly with his lower half swaddled.
