Adalyn's Birth Story (snmetz7)

Short Story: Adalyn was born 4/10/14 at 6:48 am via unplanned c-section. 7lb 8oz and 20.75 in long.

Long Story: At my appointment on Tuesday there was a small blip on my NST. It showed that for a period of time, Adalyn was under distress. The Dr said that the rest of the test looked really good and that it would probably be nothing but at 39+ weeks with an induction already scheduled for the next night, it didn't make any sense to wait. So we agreed to start the induction process that night.

We left the Drs office to get some dinner, finish up packing and head in to L&D. We decided to go ahead and tell our parents that were heading in making sure to tell them that it would be a very long process and not to come until we were ready to see people and that we would let them know when that was. My parents are notorious for showing up so we were pretty hesitant to tell them at all but decided that we should. They respected our wishes, his parents did not and did show up at some point, without even letting us know they were on their way but luckily Anthony caught them before they came up and acted as my bouncer and sent them home.

We got all checked in at 6pm and they asked a billion questions and then gave me cervidil at 8pm to soften my cervix and start the dilation process since I was still only at 1cm dilated.  The cervidil stays in for 12 hours so during the night I was encouraged to sleep. I was actually able to get some shut eye even though my contractions started right away. They were pretty steady right off the bat at about 4 mins apart lasting for 30 sec. They were very mild and sometimes I couldn't even feel them even though they were registering on the monitor. This gave me a lot of confidence going forward with my natural birth plan that we had spent months planning for.

8 am they took the cervidil out and I was STILL at 1cm and 70% effaced! :( So they started me on pitocin at 9. Contractions did not pick up at all but continued to be steady and increased in severity a bit so at 5 pm the dr checked me and I was 3 cm 100% effaced. We decided to go ahead and break the water. Contractions picked way up at this point and by 9 pm they were 4 deep with no resting period and I just couldn't handle it any more. So at 9 pm, 25 hours in, 4 cm dilated I decided to get the epi. It was a very hard decision but without any rest in between my body coulnd't keep up with the pain.

I was on epi and pitocin for 8 hours with no progress. They finally told me that Adalyn was trying to come out tilted and was not putting enough pressure on my cervix to dilate. At 5 am, we had no choice but to go with a c-section. I started crying, I really did not want to go that route at all and to be honest felt like a huge failure for not being able to do what my body was meant to do. The Dr showed up at 6 am and we went right into surgery.

I couldn't feel anything but a whooole lot of pressure. It was freezing and I couldn't help but shake uncontrolably they had to get a little heater and heat my arms and face. Anthony was next to my head the whole time and I cried when I finally heard her cry. They told Anthony to look at her, she was still on the other side of the sheet at that point and he got a full view of me completly open and my uterus completely outside my body being stiched up. I am very impressed that he didn't pass out at that point. They let Anthony hold her right away and gave her to me as soon as I was all stictched up.

And that's the birth story of Miss Adalyn Nanette. Born 4/10/14 at 6:48 am 7lb 8oz 20.75in long.

  • Congratulations on your baby girl! You are NOT a failure, you did what you had to do to get her out safe and healthy which makes you a completely awesome mama already.
And I totally understand having no breaks between contractions- I wasn't even on picotin but I got there too and I also got the epi at that point. You HAVE to have some rest between intense contractions or your body just wears out so fast- not to mention you need to regroup mentally.
Hope you have a speedy recovery- enjoy your new DD!
