So, DH lost his job a month ago (yes, 3 days after DS's birthday) and since then, DS has not been sleeping well. Many times, he'll start by crying for no reason (won't eat, clean diaper, cries so long that i think he would've fallen asleep already, not hurt, etc.) for up to a couple of hours. Then he'll eventually fall asleep, only to wake up again within two hours to do it all again. Lately, he's gotten to where he falls asleep within a reasonable amount of time and will stay that way long enough to where I think it's time to put him in his crib, but once we put him down, he wakes up and cries until we pick him up again. This has resulted in DH and me getting maybe 4 hours of sleep at night, and even then it's broken up.
He's always been a good sleeper. Slept through the night since about 4 months old, and has only had night wakings when sick. We thought maybe he was just teething, but he's gottn past teethings faster than this. Is this just how he's reacting to the change in routine? He used to go to daycare 4 days a week, now he only goes once or twice, due to DH being home. If so, it's been 4 weeks- could it be taking him this long to adjust? Or is this completely normal? Any tips?
Re: 13-month-old Sleeping NIGHTMARE
Oh and this was the first time that teething ever gave us problems. Those molars are a pain!
Check the molars. My daughter seemed to be teething for some time but I kept checking and those bottom teeth I was expecting were showing no signs at all...then one day she laughed and I saw her top molars! Duh, I never thought to check for molars when she only had 2 bottom teeth (and the top 4). She is now about to pop the bottom molars (I can see them right there) but still no signs of the bottom 2 teeth.
Have the ears checked. I am always worried about the ears and I used to work with a child that went for his 18month shots and the doctor looked and the poor boy had a double ear infect and one ear had perforated it was so bad. The kid had shown NO signs of being uncomfortable! Now when things are off and I can't figure out why I make the doctor check her ears. There's never been an ear infection and I think the doctor thinks I'm weird but oh well! My daughter always pulls on her ears when teething so it makes me worry.
Just keep it consistent...sleep comes and goes at this age. If you act consistently it will help him to get back to normal sleep routine. We never CIO but we try to keep her in her crib, we stand next to it, rub her back, shhhh etc until she falls asleep. Though for the most part we just plop her down and leave and she's fine.
