Turning away from bottle

Our LO just turned 9 months last week. He's growing and gaining well so the DR is not at all concerned. He just said he needs to eat a minimum of 16 oz. But he's starting to turn away from the bottle so I'm concerned. For the whole month of March he averaged 19 oz/day. In April he's already down to 17 oz. Today it was a struggle to get 16. He's eating fruit/oatmeal or fruit/rice mix in the morning and veggies in the afternoon. And obviously prefers them. He won't even take a sip of milk with solids so we don't bother making it anymore. He will drink water from his sippy cup but less than an ounce. Any suggestions? Guidance? Tips? Like I said, he's growing and gaining well so not concerned there. Just not sure how we're going to go another three months like this. It seems like he's drinking less every day. TIA!!!

Do you mix the rice cereal or oatmeal cereal with formula/breast milk? Cause that can count towards his minimum requirement. I would just recommend giving him his milk well before/after giving him solids so he's hungry for it. If he's gaining fine I wouldn't worry.

  • He may be ready for more solids. As pp said you can mix in BM or formula whichever he is on to account for the 16oz. Some babies like solids and want those more. Maybe try a sippy cup too.
  • Nursing sessions are def more of a wrestling match these days. We do mostly BLW and they eat a ton 3x a day.

It's a function of the age, too. They're so interested in their surroundings and playing and interacting w new things that the bottle/boob isn't nearly as fun.

I get good feeds out of them before naps (one of their nursing sessions is right before a nap), before bed, and MOTN (they eat at least once). Maybe try to sneak in a dreamfeed if you're concerned?

Otherwise, just roll with it. Keep offering, obviously, bc all those good fats are crucial, but you may find 3 weeks from now, he had a growth spurt and wants to eat all the time.

  • Yes, I mix formula with cereal and include that in the totals. On the days he's low, I'll put cereal with his veggies too. Otherwise I only put cereal with his fruit at breakfast.

He gets solids twice a day. We gave him a few days of three times and his milk input dropped dramatically so I went back to two.

  • I tried to write thst last post days ago and the mobile bump wouldn't let me post.

Anyway, I got him level 3 nipples and he's back to eating full bottles. Yay!!!!!!

  • My daughter has severe reflux, we had a horrible time she would so back flips that's how bad it was. We put her on goats milk add cereal to her bottle and she is on Prilosec and Zantac. Sometimes I think the Zantac doesn't work. We started her on solids at 3 months and have never looked back. Cereal was great it weighed everything down. If she wouldn't eat she would get cereal with milk. Also the reflux seemed to get much better the more solids she ate.
