C-section mamas...when can I

Take a bath?

I am 5.5 weeks pp. My incision looks good, sealed up. I know everyone has a different situation but when were you cleared to take a bath?

  • I was cleared for everything at 6 weeks. I probably would have been fine before but I didn't want to risk it.

  • My doc cleared me at 3 weeks. He is pretty laid back and even cleared me for sex then too.

  • The hospital told me no pool, bath, etc until after the 6 week appointment. They said not just beause of the incision but because my cervix is still closing and you don't want the water getting all up in there.

It could be BS, but I'm following rules. Lol

    Anniversary

  • My doc cleared me for everything at my 2 week appointment. I went in the pool yesterday.
  • I was cleared at 2 weeks pp.
  • My OB told me to take baths at my 2 week appointment. She used adhesive to close me up (no stitches) and said a good soak would help it peel off gently. I'm 4.5 weeks pp now and all the adhesive is gone and the incision site looks pretty good.

  • My doc also said no baths or any type of submurging in water or sex until 6 week checkup.. Something about internal infection even if you're fine on the outside. I went yesterday and she said since everything looked good, I could resume all regular activity.
  • I was cleared for most everything at two weeks. But, I think it really depends on how your incision was closed

This is what I've heard. However, I never even went into labor...I had an ECS for preeclampsia... So how dilated could my cervix be 5.5 wks pp? Also my water never broke...does it break during the c section? I wish I understood biology more.

  • With a c-section the doctor ruptures the waters just before they get baby out.

I guess you water would automatically break when they cut into your uterus? And I'm also curious as to how they remove your placenta with an RCS... Aren't your contractions during labor what makes it detach? Wouldn't you hemorrhage/lose too much blood if they just cut it out? Meant to ask all this at my checkup yesterday and forgot, ugh.

  • Yeah I took a bath but have some dull soreness at the corners of my incision...and also I am heavily bleeding...not scary heavy, but annoying heavy...I've been bleeding for almost 6 weeks!!! So no more baths til I see the midwife.

  • Thanks for answering our questions, @babycaps‌. It makes me nervous that I'll be having an RCS next time :/
  • @babycaps‌, my hospital doesn't allow VBACs and the next nearest hospital is hours away. Also, i don't know what disqualifies you from a VBAC...I don't know if I'd be favorable? I was incapable of birthing LO due to size and he was only 8lb 12oz. I have a super small frame/pelvis. I would def opt for one if I could! I'm one of those that's had difficultly dealing with my cs.
