1st Trimester

7 weeks, 4 days - 2 sacs and no heartbeat(s)

I am hoping you can give me some guidance from either personal experience. I recently found out I was pregnant and went to my first prenatal appt yesterday afternoon. The doctor did a vaginal u/s and saw two sacs but no heartbeat. She swore she found it for a second but then disappeared. She informed my husband and I that I could have TWINS...or none at all. She seemed concerned and sent me to get lab work. I just recieved her phone call and my hcg level came back at 20,000!! My doctor said we could easily be having twins but would need to go back tomorrow afternoon for more blood work. I was told if my hcg levels go up by 53%, that I am definitely having twins but if it only increases by (for example) 5,000 that my pregnancy may not be viable. I am very anxious to know!!! I'm trying not to stress out but how can I not?! Have you or anyone you known gone through this? Please share your story...i'm a bit nervous.

Also, I did experience light cramping last week but nothing painful and have not bled at all (which I assume is a good sign). I also have not had any nausea but have been really hungry. My breasts are not as sore as a few weeks ago but still pretty sore. Personally I feel like I am getting bigger but that may just be from eating/ snacking too much ;-)

  • How are you dating your pregnancy? By LMP, or were you charting your temp to detect ovulation?

  • My last loss was a similar situation. However, I have seen multiple stories of this occurring at first u/s and the second u/s was just fine (particularly if dating was a bit off).
There truly is nothing to do right now but wait and I know how horrible that is!!!
    Huge hugs!

  • I am dating it from my LMP, which my doctor seem to confirm. I guess I could always be off but I will we'll just have to wait for blood work tomorrow and her call on Saturday. Fingers crossed!
  • When I went in for my first appt, it was a similar situation. They saw a sac but no heartbeat. If your levels seem fine, I would just guess that you ovulated late.

  • I received the doctors call on Saturday afternoon and unfortunately got an answer I was hoping not to hear.  :( Unfortunately my level dropped from 20,000 to 19,000 which the doctor said was not a viable pregnancy. She gave me 3 options, 1. let nature takes it course, 2. she would prescribe me a pill to soften my cervix (?) and 3. go in and get a d&c. I am extremely sad about the outcome but now I have to think of what to do. This is something I was not expecting nor do I even have the energy to deal with it. I guess I'm really still hoping for the best as I have read a few stories where the levels drop but then rise slowly and a healthy baby is born. Has this happened to anyone (dropped levels, then rise)?

I am supposed to be 8 weeks and 2 days but the doctor couldnt find any of their heartbeats as of 7 weeks and 4 days, how long does it take for someone to miscarry if nature takes its course?
    :(
  • I'm so sorry you are going through this. There is no set time when your body will take over. It could be today, next week, or a month. If you are willing to wait, maybe you could set a date for a D&C if it doesn't happen by a certain date. Or take the meds and hope it happens quickly. I've had 2 natural MCs & I was glad that I was able to be at home while dealing with them. It's a personal choice though. GL!!

  • Thank you rlyttle. The doctor did mention that if I choose to have nature takes its course then we would wait it out about a week. If it didn't happen by the end of this week, she would want me to come in...but didn't say for what exactly. I can only assume a d&c. I know everyone is different but how long did your miscarriages last (if that's the correct term to ask)?
  • Naturally I was devastated when I found out I did not have a viable pregnancy. However, the dr. had me go in and get more blood work done yesterday and she just called me back with the results. It looks like my levels went up to 25,000. She really didn't give me any reasoning or explanation as to what may have happened, so I am still left wondering. Have any of you gone through this? If so, what was the outcome??

    Thanks!
  • My first set of betas were done within 48 hrs. The first on Wednesday and the next one on Friday, however my doctor suggested I go again yesterday, so it is now my third time.

  • I wish I had some advice! What does the doctor say now that your levels have gone up again?

I'm sure you know this but, they should really be done every 48 hours to see if they are doubling. With numbers like that though, has your OB talked about a follow up ultrasound? I'm wondering if one of the sacs didn't develop but the other has, which would explain the numbers going slightly down and then back up again.

    Good luck!

My understanding is that once the numbers are this high, they don't double in 48 hours anymore. My OB said after about 6,000, the rate of increase slows down.

You're right, I completely forgot about that.

But, if your OB said that, it's weird they still did the beta draw. I'd definitely ask about an ultrasound to follow up, simply because I think that's going to be the most accurate way for you to know what's going on.

I'm not the OP :)  But, I agree that it makes sense to ask about an ultrasound follow-up.
  • Thank you all!!! I do have another ultrasound scheduled with my regular OB tomorrow afternoon. Originally my OB wasn't available to do my first ultrasound so I saw another OB which is apparently new. Hopefully my regular OB gives me some good news and possibly hears a heartbeat since I'll be 9 weeks this upcoming Saturday.
  • Hoping for the best!

I just wanted to send hugs and happy thoughts your way. At 12 weeks, we found out that our pregnancy may, or may not be viable. First bad news from one doctor, then another doctor was optimistic, then the confirmation that the first doctor had been right. Because of all the blood work and tests it took a couple of weeks. Our daughter had an extremely severe chromosomal abnormality, so my situation was different. However I can completely relate to the back and forth feeling you've been going through. I am so sorry you had to feel that and hope that things continue to look better every day for you.

  • Please give yourself permission to grieve and at the same time be joyous about your loss and good news. A vanishing twin makes perfect sense with your numbers and I hope your baby continues to grow healthy and strong!

  • Once again, we're on a roll coaster ride. I really don't know how much I can take of this. My regular OB wasn’t available so I saw the first original doctor that told me I would likely miscarry. Well she did another ultrasound yesterday and told me that she did not see a heartbeat. He had me go take more blood work. She called me back last night and told me that the number increased since the last time I did the blood work, but it LOOKS like it is not a viable pregnancy. It went from 25,000 to 27,000. If there is no heartbeat, why do my numbers keep increasing? I know they are not increasing like they should but this is almost like false hope. The doctor may have realized she was being insensitive the first time around and this time said she would let me choose what I wanted to do. Whether I want to get another ultrasound, go in for more blood work or ...have nature takes is course. I was in tears all afternoon yesterday and now as I type this, my eyes are filled with tears. Has anyone ever experienced slow rising hCG levels and still had a healthy baby or had another outcome?

    Fri, 3/14: 19,000
    Tues, 3/18: 25,000

  • Im sorry you're on such a roller coaster ride. I do not have any experience with betas yet so I'll defer to the experts. Just wanted to says ((hugs)) and that I hope you get some definitive answers soon.
  • Unfortunately, there was no good news at all. I was told the babies likely stopped developing at 6 weeks and have since been walking around with all the symptoms but no actual babies. :( It is so depressing to even have to think about it. I was prescribed Misoprostol last Thursday since they didnt come on their own. The one thing I cant seem to get out of my mind is the feeling of having the sac come out. I only saw one, but I assume that's only because the other baby was a vanishing twin. I am so devastated!

I am still lightly bleeding (a little heavier than my normal periods), but I still have a lot of pain in my stomach. I am so bloated and even feels hard (as if I were 5/6 months pregnant). I have only gone pee since Thursday so I can only assume I am hurting because I haven't been able to go #2 since then. Has anyone taken Misoprostol before? What were your symptoms and when did you feel back to normal?

Btw, sorry if I should be posting this else where. I just didnt know where to actually post this.
  • No experience with misoprostol, but just wanted to say I am so terribly sorry for your loss. Sending lots of thoughts / prayers your way.
