Bouncing back from the flu

Any tips for how to get my supply back up?  Last week was my first week back working, and I pumped just enough to keep up with DD at daycare Thursday.  Friday, the stomach bug of the century hit.  I have been really working to get a lot of fluids in, but have still been nauseous and haven't been able to eat as much as I'd like, so I feel my supply is suffering.  I nursed her all weekend, and got 3.5 ounces this morning, which is about half of what I normally get in my first pump of the day.  I have a bit of a freezer stash but it's quickly dwindling.

I'll also take any tips on supplementing or switching to formula.  I have been lucky enough to make it to 3 months without needing any supplementation or formula, and I honestly don't know where to begin.

Re: Bouncing back from the flu

  • It sounds like you're doing the right thing by drinking lots of fluids.  Eat what you can - maybe try incorporating some oatmeal (it's relatively bland, so maybe it'll be easy on your stomach?).

Keep up drinking lots, make sure you get enough calories and rest enough, and maybe up the frequency of your pumping at work (every 2 hours if you were doing every 3, or every 1.5 if you were doing every 2).

You can also try a session of power pumping in the evenings to boost supply - 10 minutes on 10 minutes off the pump for an hour.

Since it sounds like your bug was short-lived, hopefully your supply will recover soon!

  • Power pumping sounds like a good idea, and I'll add a session.  Thanks for the ideas.  If you can't tell, I'm pretty discouraged at the moment.

  • Just an update: thanks so much for the encouragement. I pumped every 2 hours today at work and was able to get enough for daycare tomorrow. I'm going to add a pump before bed at night to get my freezer stash back up, and if that doesn't work, maybe one MOTN. I just really appreciate the responses. This was a challenging time for me and just knowing it could be done was huge!
