May be inappropriate for some viewers

Question: At what point do you worry about what is on the radio/tv in front of your baby?

MH is a huge Howard Stern fan and I scolded him for listening to it with the baby. He looked at me like I had 2 heads and said that didn't matter yet. Then I basically did the same thing as I sat on the couch watching GOT with A in my arms. At what point does content need to be censored in your opinion?

Re: May be inappropriate for some viewers

  • I can second this question.
My H will cuss and whatnot in front of her and it makes me look at him like why can't he clean his mouth in front of her!

My opinion is when she starts repeating. When that is i'm not sure.

  • We keep asking ourselves this question as well. We haven't censored ourselves yet because she's only 4.5 weeks old. Im thinking we'll start maybe around 3 months just to make sure we're in a good habit. It's tough because I'm stuck nursing so much and the tv I want to watch is stuff I wouldn't want her watching. Though for now I figure she can neither see it nor understand it.
  • We started censoring tv around 10 months. Still working on the language.

  • When they start talking realistically.

This. We started censoring cussing from day one because it's a hard habit to break. TV censoring started around 2-2.5. DS is almost 3 now and is very aware of what's on tv and repeats nearly everything he hears.

You'll definitely notice when your LO becomes aware speech and what's on TV. Right now though, supposedly babies can't even see the TV clearly, just like light.

  • We started on the language as soon as DD1 was born - sometimes it's really hard to break a habit.

The tv, I didn't think to censor her on anything until DD1 was in her exersaucer watching Harry Potter with me and got freaked out when Wormtail turned back into a rat.  Oops - mom fail.

Parent fail the other night - I was cleaning and DH was watching the kiddos.  I came out and asked him what DD1 was watching... she was sitting on the couch and being as good as can be.  He looked at me kind of sheepishly and said "Bones..."  Oops...
  • My Dd is a big talker and we learned very early on that we needed to watch what we said way before we thought we needed to. It was somewhere around 18 months that dh called some sports guy a douche and clear as day little dd is watching Mickey and says 'Mickey douche'...a while later she says 'daddy douche'. Big wake up call! We already have to watch what we say and censor the tv because of dd but if we didn't have a toddler, knowing what I do now, I would start around 8-10 months. They are paying attention long before it seems like they are!
  • DH and I keep saying we need to watch our language now, we both curse way too much!
As for tele, we will change what we watch when LO starts paying attention to it.
  • Language immediately. The sooner you break the habit the better. Plus kids pick that stuff up way before they are able to vocalize it.

  • I was wondering about this too. Almost everything we like on TV is rated MA. I've tried to cut back on the swearing, but it's not easy.

  • I would say before a year. They understand and remember more than you'd think.

  • We're just now starting to censor ourselves since DS1 is at the repeating stage. However, we do slip up on occasion. And boy is he quick to pick up on the slips. Yikes.

  • My 3 y/o learned the word "suckers" as in "see ya later suckers" from Planes today. :(

I'd say around 8 months we really started censoring what we watched. We don't swear a lot, so that wasn't really an issue for us.

We're now at the stage where we have to spell everything. Heaven forbid he hears us mention the park or ice cream. He won't let us forget we said it until he gets it!
  • June and I watch Total Divas and Walking Dead together. I don't know when we'll censor tv. My mouth is a whole different story. I need to start practicing now.

  • Also I'm dreading the day it gets weird to have sexy time when she's asleep in the room.

  • I think waiting until they start repeating is far too late. By that point they have already heard and understood under what circumstances a word is used.
They may not be able to say it yet though.

I believe we did our best to use proper words and not swear in front of DD by the time she was 6 months.
Most of what they learn is through repetition, and mimicking.

We do our best to be good in front of DS1 since last summer.
He is just now starting to copy sounds and words. But he has understood much more for the last 8 or more months.
