December 2013 Moms

MOTY - so, that just happened...

I was headed out on errands and in front of my doctors office the parking spots are way small. So I park, go to the door to get DD out in her car seat, pull out the car seat and lock the doors and put the keys in with her in the car seat. All normal. Right as I am about to close the door, a lady carrying a box comes to the car next to me. She can't get the door open wide enough to get the box in so she asked if I would move the car some. No problem.

I set DDs car seat back in the base, reach in, grab keys and close the door to go to my door. Get to me door and the keys I have are her little teether keys. DD is now locked in the car!! DH is out of town, my parents are out of town, I don't have AAA, so I have to call 911 to have them come unlock the car.

I end up being that woman, and DD is crying hysterically in the car. The firemen get there, make me feel even more like crap than I already do, the other lady is profusely apologizing for distracting me, and then I ugly cry all the way home from the emotions/ hormones/ adrenalin, etc... Needless to say, errands were abandoned and now I am just home cuddling DD for a bit.

  • I've done this by accident. In the summer. Thankfully it was in my driveway and I have a neighbor who's a cop and broke I to the car for me. I totally ugly cried for an hour or so.
  • I'm sorry that happened the good news is that she is OK and will never remember that this happened.

  • Awww it's okay!!! My mom locked DS2 in the car when he was 8 weeks old! (And I locked DS1 in the car when he was about 6 months).  I was totally the chick freaking out, calling 911.
Don't worry, it happens :) I would be more pissed off at the fire dept for making you feel like shit...who does that??? I'm sorry it happened....I promise though, it basically happens to everybody.  Don't feel bad!

  • I'm so sorry that happened to you. Glad you and LO are reunited. I can only imagine what it would be like to know your child is crying and you can't do anything.
  • I did that on several occasions with my son when he was little. It happens to the best of us.
  • This is why I never lock my car doors - I am sure if I do, I am going to lock LO in the car one day :-)

I second everyone who says you're not a bad mom and screw those firemen for making you feel like you were.

  • That sucks! I'm so glad my car doesn't look with teh keys in it, I'm sure I would have done it by now.
  • Aww, I'm sorry that happened!  Ditto everyone else that the firemen were jerks, and the woman should have put the box in the trunk or backed her car out first!

This. Before I even got to the locked in part I was like "why doesn't she back her own Damn car up or put it in the trunk". Give that baby lots of snuggles and have a glass of wine with dinner, you deserve.it.

  • Oh no! I'm sorry you had to go through that. I think it happens more often than people realize. My mom did this when my brother was younger. Shame on the fireman for making you feel bad!
  • WTF Fireman?! But even more than that...WTF lady for asking you to move your car?! If I were in her shoes I would try anything else before asking a mom with her baby to get back in their car and move it.  I'm going to say she probably didn't have kids.

Sorry this happened to you, OP.

  • I locked DD2 in the car in May,in Florida at Walmart. The fireman had to break my window too. It happens, thank goodness my new car I can't lock the keys in it.
  • oh my goodness, I am SO sorry! :(  I can't imagine how awful that felt!
  • I'm sorry! I'd be hysterical too! Last summer I locked myself and both kids out of the house. I was barefoot and they were both in swimsuits. Accidents happen! Don't beat yourself up over it.

  • I'm sorry. It's a horrible feeling.

DH accidentally locked DS1 in his truck in our driveway. The spare key was in his truck, of course. I freaked out because it was hot out and we broke a window to get in. It was a scary 3 minutes!

  • Oh! This is one of my biggest fears! And my car only has one set of keys! I keep it by itself on a carabiner that I attach to my person as soon as its not needed... Buck up :). And.. The firemen were jerks. There's no reason to make a mom cry. On behalf of firemen everywhere ELSE... I'm so sorry!
