Thinking of opening business

DH has wanted me to do small business mainly for tax purposes, not to make millions but stay busy and in the end not loose money.
He wanted me to do mobile groomer, start up is fairly low cost but as much as I love animals I have no interest. I would really like an indoor kid playground like gymboree etc. There are few locations in Vegas but many are small and instead of having separate room for parties or classes they close open gym during that time. Which is big complaint on yelp about most of the places. There isn't one on my side of town so I would have advantage there.
Basically I am nervous about owning a business and financial burden. There are loans for women and military but still nervous. Are any J13ers business owners or starting new business? If you had DH supporting you to do this would you go for it?

Re: Thinking of opening business

  • I have the business sense of an aardvark, so maybe take this with a grain of salt.

Have you owned a small business before? Are there startup entrepreneur classes you can take? Have you looked into the work running an indoor playground would entail?

I mean, the idea sounds awesome and it seems like you've already done some scoping of the situation.

Any other J13ers want to weigh in?

  • DH has taken business classes. I have managed a medical office but it is different approving expenses when it isn't your
money. I can't decide if I want to pay the extra price for a store front with drive by traffic or go for larger space with cheaper rent. Two of the places in San Diego I have gone to are in more of warehouse which I actually preferred.
The major cost is not build out persay but the equipment, a small soft play area can be $500+. To furnish a entire playground depending on size will probably be $50,000. I am not worried about weekend but I definitely want at least one full time employee.

  • You are not discouraging I like to know and plan as much as possible

  • It is so much work to own your own business. So.much. Sometimes I think it'd be easier if we both got new jobs but then I think of all the benefits of having your own business. It's awesome to have the flexibility but the insurance we have to carry is so expensive and so is everything else. It took us years to get where we are now and it wasn't an easy road.

I'd really think about it and don't do anything you aren't interested in like the grooming you mentioned. If your heart isn't in it then it'd be tough to put your all into it.

Also, make sure you know what you're doing with your books or hire an accountant as soon as your doors open :)

Good luck in whatever you decide!
  • Can you franchise a Gymboree? Not sure if that's an option for you but that way you'd have the backing and link to knowledge. & experience of other gyms. Just an idea.
