Trouble TTC

Made my first RE appt!

Made my first RE appt for May 12th.  I have no idea what to expect?!  I figured some of you ladies could give me some insight.  AF finally showed up and now I am on clomid round 3, at 100mg and I have to go in for bloodwork on day 21. That will all happen before I go in to the RE.  Thanks for any insight you can give!

Re: Made my first RE appt!

  • Meeting with the RE was a relief.  I walked in nervous as hell and left feeling very comfortable and confident.  A few little things - you probably will review your medical history and your husbands medical history so be prepared to answer a ton of questions.  I brought a notepad and a pen with me - the information exchange was pretty lengthy for me.  Write any questions that you have down beforehand so you remember to ask.  I did not have an exam during my consultation, but some others have - so just be aware that it might happen.

One major thing to note - is are you being monitored while you're taking clomid?  Clomid can over stimulate your follicles.  Everyone on this board is a huge advocate of proper monitoring while taking clomid.  You don't want to end up with eight kids at once.  :)

  • Thanks ladies!  I have asked multiple times about getting an ultrasound to monitor this round of clomid (and the last) but my OB says I don't need it.  Hence the RE appt, because I am tired of my OB not seeming to care!

  • If I were you, I would refuse to take clomid without proper ultrasound monitoring.  Your OB is bumping your clomid up to 100 without monitoring, that's crazy.  I started off with 100 mg of Clomid and was able to get three mature eggs at once.  I hate to say this at the risk of sounding really bad, but I feel like you're playing russian roulette.  You NEED to be monitored.

  • One more thing to mention - clomid thins uterine lining.  If you get pregnant and your lining is too thin, you may not be able to properly support a pregnancy.

I'm on progesterone inserts immediately following an IUI - progesterone helps support a pregnancy and can help thicken the lining.

I apologize if this comes off where I sound like a jerk, but you need to be your own patient care advocate.  If you don't stand up for what is right for you and your body, then no one will.  I hope that you can speak with your OB and come to an agreement about monitoring before you get too deep into taking clomid again.

  • I'm so glad you found an RE and are able to move onto the next step! I loved our first appointment - it was a shock that we could get an appointment right away (I wasn't quite ready), but now I'm glad because it still takes a while to complete testing.

The first meeting, I brought my Fertility Friend charts and DH's previous SA results, and of course they got med records from my GYN and GP. The RE had already gotten very familiar with everything before talking to me, so he just asked questions to fill in the gaps. I was actually happy to see he had an intern/resident with him, and he said they had gone through my chart together, haha!

Mostly the RE just reassured me that I was right to seek treatment, and told me the first round of testing and gave us a folder with info and the timing because of course I would never remember it. He mentioned Clomid and IUI, but and offered that I could get started on treatment before testing was complete (but I've decided not to, since I want to make sure any treatments are the most effective, given the cost and side effects).

I felt so much better after putting it in the hands of an expert. I didn't get a physical exam except for weight and blood pressure. The only uncomfortable part of the appointment was sitting in the waiting room with many other couples and individuals. It felt really embarrassing and I was afraid of seeing someone I knew. I guess that is the pervasive shame of IF, and hopefully will get over it!!

Knowing the risks of thinned uterine lining and multiple follicles, it's strange your OB wasn't open to more monitoring. Perhaps he/she doesn't know how?? Of course it's your own choice, and plenty of women do Clomid cycles without monitoring, especially with TI. But since you've already started this round of Clomid, might it make sense to call your new RE's office and explain your concerns about monitoring, and see what they suggest?
